Preterm babies
I had my DD at 37 weeks......for those of you who had 37 weekers- do you go by their actual birthdate or their adjusted age?

For milestones and such I heard to go by their adjusted age.

I had my son at 33 weeks . . Like the PP said for all milestones you go by adjusted age until 2 yrs old.

Dd was born at 35 weeks. I never went by adjusted age since she didn't have any issues.

Ds #2 was born at 37 weeks. I dont adjust and dr doesnt either, I sonetimes wonder if we should. i have noticed he is a few weeks behind on some milestones than his older brother was which would be the same if he was born at 40 weeks.

37 weeks is not preterm. My DS was born at exactly 37 weeks all on his own and not due to any complications or anything. Dr never once said he was preterm and when I questioned it he said you are full term at 37 weeks.

37 weeks isn't preterm and you would not use adjusted age. Where I worked we didn't use adjusted age after 35 weeks.

My twins were born at 37w and that is considered full term for twins. Ped said I.could go by either age but honestly the range for.milestones is much larger than 3 weeks so I wouldnt worry about it.
Eta.my kids have hit their.milestones at different ages- its reall true when they say every baby is different.

37w is considered full term, so I would go by actual birthdate.

Preterm and premature are two different things. I believe that as of very recently, babies born before 39 weeks are considered preterm, but not premature. There should not be an age adjustment for preterm.

I believe you are correct, I remember reading about this new distinction on a prematurity Facebook group. I do think the distinction is 37-39 weeks is preterm and less than 37 is premature. 35-37 is "late preterm" but defiantly not premature.
To the original poster- You shouldn't have to correct age at all but keep in mind that each baby is different. My daughter was premature and born at 32 weeks due to severe preeclampsia. Despite the fact that she was 2 months premature, we never had to correct age for anything other than height and weight and she is now caught up. She hit every single milestone on time or early so again. I know people who had full term babies that did not hit milestones like my daughter did and continues to do, every baby is different.

This is the article that makes the definitions of preterm and preterm more narrow. Apparently the new definitions were adopted in the US because so many people are scheduling c-sections earlier than should be allowed.

The new distinctions are
• Early term: Between 37 weeks 0 days and 38 weeks, six days
• Full term: Between 39 weeks and 40 weeks, six days
• Late term: Between 41 weeks and 41 weeks, six days
• Post term: 42 weeks and beyond

I never really considered my girls pre term at 36 weeks bc they would have been delivered at 38 weeks the latest. But for EI they consider them a month younger with milestones. (They are ahead with some but they give them an extra mo with others). Also, things like different vitamins with iron since they were born before 37 weeks. But I definitely don't compare them to tiny 34 or less weekers.

nope.. never adjusted her age. Frankly I never adjusted the twins age when they were kids either. They were 3m premmies. We just said they are X#of Months and ppl would say "oh they look so small" yep, they are premmies.. never told them how many months etc. Just they were premature and they are X number of months old. Age started the moment they were 'born'.
Now that's not the case and folks have 'adjusted' ages and I'm silently grateful I don't have to keep up with that kind of stuff!

DD1 was born at 35 w 6 days and we never adjusted her age...neither did the pediatrician.
