Moms with DC with cough variant asthma?
I suspect that my son, 5, may have this.
He gets a bad cough that lingers anytime he gets a cold or his allergies act up. It is horrible at night.
Was it diagnosed by the ped? Did you get treatment by a pulmonary doctor?
What type of Meds does your child take to control it?

My DC has this. Has since about 18 months. It was diagnosed by an allergist. For DC its an allergy induced asthma, as well as a cold. We control it with singular and a nebulizer. They both made a world of difference.

My DD has the EXACT same symptoms and was diagnosed (by her ped) with CVA before she was one. She's been on Singulair ever since. She's now 5 and we just took her to a pediatric pulmonologist to look into her situation further. We had all kinds of testing done........stress test, allergy tests, X-rays etc. Surprisingly, they think it might actually be a chronic post nasal drip that's causing her issues as opposed to CVA. It would explain why her cough is ALWAYS worse when she's sick.
They have her on a nasal spray to help with the post nasal drip, it's called Fluticasone Propionate which dries out her nasal passages. They also prescribed Hydroxyzine as needed if her cough is acting up when she's sick. We saw the doctor on a Monday and she had a ton of mucous from the post nasal drip, a week later after being on the nasal spray she was totally cleared up.
The Singulair does work so they said we can keep her on it if we want but we kind of hate medicating her daily at such a young age, especially if it might not be necessary. For now, we decided to keep her off everything except the nasal spray and see how she does. It's been over a week now and still no cough which is really good for her, it's the longest she's ever gone without her medicine.
Her stress tests and lung functions came back perfect and she had zero allergies so the pulmonologist really felt it isn't CVA, he's pretty certain it's a post nasal drip. We will use the nasal spray to keep her nasal passages clear and take it from there. If her cough returns we might consider going back to the Singulair.
I recommend talking to your ped but also going to a specialist as well. My ped didn't do any testing, he just went off of her symptoms for a diagnosis. I was surprised to hear it might not be CVA after all and we did feel better after all of the testing. It was a comfort to hear she was healthy overall.

ETA - She has a nebulizer but we found it never really helped. The pulmo dr said that's usually a sign that it isn't a true asthma. We should see a real improvement after a nebulizer treatment and we never did.

2 of my boys have this. The older one(3.5yo) was on pulmacort and singular. They were causing significant behavioral side effects so we just recently decided to stop the meds. We went to a pulmonologist and he had all allergy testing done...no allergies. First sign of a cold, they start wheezing like crazy and we have had multiple ER trips and hospitalizations. This is very stressful to deal with! :(

Same. Anytime DD gets a cold the cough comes on and lasts all day. We treat it with an inhaler and/or a nebulizer.

This sounds like my son, too! I wonder if it is postnasal drip, especially since it acts up when he is lying down.
We have done xopenex with a nebulizer when he has a cough, not sure if it does much, though. There is asthma on my DH's side of the family, and nasal allergies on mine(lucky kid, huh?)
I think I will make an appt with a pulmonary doc. I would like to get their thoughts.
Thanks to everyone for your input!!! It is very helpful. My poor guy was up hacking with his cough last night again. I just want him to sleep and get the rest his body needs!!
