DH grandfather just passed away suddenly - questions pertaining to DC questions

My DH grandfather just passed away a few hours ago. We don't know why yet. He went into the hospital on Christmas, was his gallbladder. They were going to send him home tomorrow and then schedule his surgery. He was FINE today. Up, walking around, watching football, eating, etc. Totally fine.
He went to sleep and never woke up.

We had a lovely Christmas Eve with them, he was in good spirits and in seemingly perfect health.

He passed away a few hours ago.

We told DC. They understand. Especially the oldest, who is in early elementary school. However, this DC wants to know HOW he died.

I don't know how to answer that. I told him he is in heaven and DC gets that. DC knows his body stays on earth and gets buried. Gets that. DC wants to know HOW though.

I don't want to tell DC that he went to sleep and never woke up or that he was sick. I don't want DC to think that could just happen to any of us and worry about that. DC just keeps asking HOW. I told DC that, right now, we don't know, bc thats true. DC is going to keep asking though. What should I tell DC?

I am sorry for your loss. Why don't you tell your DC that when people get very old, some parts of their body stop working? And without all the working parts, the body cannot work properly anymore. But I have no experience with this, just a guess on my part.

I was going to suggest something similar. I am sorry for your loss.

this is what I was thinking too. I am just afraid DC will worry about his other grandparents then, you know? Maybe DC won't, but I don't know. I don't want DC to worry about things like that.

DC is being very sweet though, keeps worrying about his great grandma and how she will be alone now. DC was very close to them. DC is their oldest great grandchild so they had a lot of time together and we saw them often.

OK, I try not to reveal the sex or age of my DC on here but I need to for this story bc it gives me so much solace right now.

DS (the one who is asking how) is the 4th....he is named after the GGF who just passed away, as is my FIL and DH. Every xmas eve since he was born we have taken a pic of the 4 generations of "Name". This year, at dinner, we forgot.

On the way home, I realized we didn't do it this year. I remembered about 20 minutes into the car ride home. I wasn't going to say anything and I thought about it for about another 5 minsute bc the kids had already fallen asleep in the car. Finally, I said to DH...."turn the car around, we can still catch them, we didn't take the picture this year". He was like "no, we will get it next year, the kids are already asleep" I let it go for a few minutes and again for some reason it was nagging at me and I was like "you need to go back, we need to get the picture."

We did and we got back to DH parents house as they were getting in the car to leave. I woke up DS, made everyone go back into the house and take the annual picture.

I will be forever grateful that we did that. It will be my most treasured picture. He was like the grandfather I didn't have, and we were all very close. That picture means even more to me now.

I'm so sorry. It's hard explaining it. My dd is 4 ad asks how Papa died. I can't tell her it was a fire. I just can't so I told her sometimes accidents happen and this time Papa couldn't get to the phone to call 911. We used it as a teaching time about 911 and calling for help. I agree telling your ds would be hard to understand and might scare him. I like what the pp said about not all the parts working and being honest that you just don't know yet. You could always try the sometimes we just don't know why approach. It's true and honest yet shouldn't be scary. It's the age where the dots start to connect that life ends and that's so hard for them and scary.
