Re: anyone with rsv virus experience???
my son had it at 7 months, came on FAST and furious but by day 5, he was almost back to normal. He didn't really have a bad cough, just other bad cold symptoms and trouble breathing/wheezing. Meds and neb def helped!

Re: anyone with rsv virus experience???
DS has it now. We went to dr and started nebulizer last wednestday 12/18.... fever and pink eye came on 12/20 (2nd dr visit), was at dr again 12/22 and they said chest sounded clear, fever was persisting. 12/24 chest was congested a little again, has ear infection now too, but we are down to nebulizer only 2 times a day.
cough is much better and less the last 2 days. We go back saturday to make sure chest is clear and hopefully we can stop.
it has been the longest week and a half ever, DH and I have a horrible cold too (which is what RSV does to adults and older children).

Re: anyone with rsv virus experience???
My DS had it just last month at 13 months. Progressed suddenly from congestion and cold symptoms to struggling to breathe. Rushed him to pedi and we were very very close to ER trip. We did nebulizer treatments every 4 hours for the first 3 days with daily visits to pedi for them to listen to his lungs. I was under strict orders to do respiration counts every 2 hours. If it got up around 40 I had to call pedi. On 3rd day they added oral steroids as well. Two days of that and daily checks and we moved neb to every. 6 hours. Then eventually every 8 and then 12. He was on neb treatments for 12 days. Then we used discretion if we thought he needed it. I would say it was a good 2 weeks for cough to stop and a good 3 before I felt his appetite and energy were back.
Now, any sign of a cold starting he gets the wheeze back. He's been on neb twice since then. Pedi says damage is done for now and this is going to be a weakness (ESP with him in daycare) but that one day he will suddenly just grow out of it.
Sucks for now though!

Re: anyone with rsv virus experience???
My oldest had it at 7 months, but she also had pneumonia at the same time and was in the hospital for 5 days. So, I can't really comment on her coughing and all that as just related to the RSV because there was the pneumonia too. She had a very high fever which would not go down is why they admitted her. The nebulizer and the antibiotics she was on for the pneumonia helped a lot.
Hope your DC feels better very soon!

Re: anyone with rsv virus experience???
My youngest had it 2 times. Both times we were at the drs every other day for checks. By day 10 he was starting to mend but we were on nebulizer for 2.5-3 weeks. There were days where he would cough so much I'd get nervous but it usually was on.a Dr day so I got peace of mind there.

My son was 2 weeks old when he had RSV. He was given no meds. He was hospitalized for a week and the cough lingered for a few weeks.

They typically only give albuterol (neb) if there is a wheeze or retractions when breathing (when the skin sucks in under ribs and into throat). We just went through this again two weeks ago.
My son was also on an oral steroid to help his breathing. That was it. There is no antibiotic or anything like that to treat it.

Re: anyone with rsv virus experience???
My oldest had it at 8 months and it lasted 12 days. My youngest has it now and were on day 8 and she seems to be doing so much better. Yesterday was the first day she didn't have any nebulizer treatments. She is still coughing but the wheezing is 90% better now. My Ped gave us albutrol(sp) plumicort (sp) for the nebulizer. My older dd was also on an oral steroid. My younger dd is on antibiotics for an ear infection but antibiotics won't help rsv because it's a virus.

Re: anyone with rsv virus experience???
My dd has it. We went to dr wed am after I noticed a cough. Dr heard a small wheeze and said hopefully she'll get better on her own. Got worse thurs and took her back fri. Was rx the nebulizer. Liquid steroid. And a z-pack.
The z-pack is because the fluid in and around lungs can get infected and her nose started to run.
But before rx the ab we did a nebulizer treatment in the office to see if it cleared her up instantly and it didn't. Really common to turn I to pneumonia too.

Re: anyone with rsv virus experience???
My dd had it at 4 months (November). She was on the nebulizer for about 10 days, then we weaned off of it. She had a cough for a while afterwards and honestly has just stared seeming to be totally back to normal. It seems like she has caught every cold possible since then. The cold air really helped her to catch her breath when she was gasping.

Re: anyone with rsv virus experience???
we were SUPER lucky with both kids...
DS spiked a fever, was coughing and wheezing. Diagnosed that night (almost had to go to ER) but began meds and was better within 5 days. Lingering cough but not bad.
Took DD to PM Peds for fever and fussiness two weeks ago. They said her chest was clear, double ear infection. I felt like her breathing was labored - like she was panting but they said she was clear. The next night, total labored breathing and wheeze. We called the ped the next morning and took her right in for an AWFUL wheeze and labored breathing. After 2 neb treatments, they sent us to Winthrop. 3 neb treatments there, prednisone and a chest xray, she was released. MUCH better the next day...
until...
norovirus kicked in. She got noro from Winthrop and we were back there 2 days later for an IV and zofran. But, her RSV symptoms were pretty much gone at that point. We even stopped the prednisone and augementin (for ear infection) to give her stomach time to relax from the noro.
So, 2-4 days for DD?
ETA - HA i see I already posted above its been a long two weeks in our house with RSV and norovirus

Re: anyone with rsv virus experience???
My daughter had it, 6w old on dec 22nd is when I noticed she was sounding a bit off, the 23rd she was labor breathing aNd coughing so we went to the er, they neb'd her w albuterol and sent her home, 24th got an at home neb w saline, but still hacky cough, 25th she had gotten worse. Er on xmas, admitted into cohens, on o2 an ivs Bc she had stopped eating at 7pm Xmas Eve Bc she was coughing and struggling to breathe. Racemic epinephrine was the next step, which seemed to help clear her better. Make sure you keep up w chest pt, cup your hand and pat the Back and chest w a little force too it'll help break up the mucous, from what all the drs told me the coughing is a good sign, means it's trying to work it's way out. It lingers Bc they can't spit it out and rid themselves of it, I used a bulb syringe and did chest pt as best I could,.

My daughter had it right when she turned 1. We actually caught it very early- just noticed her doing very quick breathing and a fever. Took her to the dr and they diagnosed her. Fever lasted another day.
