Powder Formula & Feeding Question

My question is a two parter:

1) Since my DS now takes more than 4oz per feeding, we fill the bottle with 6oz of water, add formula and shake... after it settles it looks like 6.5oz instead of 6. Can anyone clarify if it's still considered 6oz regardless of how it is after shaking it up?


2) DS will be 5 weeks tomorrow and I feel like he wants a little more food than the last feeding every time. I read somewhere that the baby should be taking in 2-2.5oz for every pound, so my 10lb son should be taking between 20-25oz per day... some days we're getting closer to 30! Am I at risk of overfeeding him? He's eating every four hours, but I don't want to be giving him too much. Any thoughts on this?

The powder and bubbles take up room. If you make it per bottle just make per directions. I used to make a bunch for the day and would only make 28 oz if I needed about 30. 2 oz over the day wasn't a big difference.

When I make 6oz by the time its all said and done it looks like a 7oz bottle so I just call it a 7oz bottle. My ped said you will know if you are over feeding if the baby pukes afterward if not feed till full.

1. I never worried about the overage. The powder itself takes up room, and it's only over by a little bit. I never bothered asking about it.

2. I don't follow any strict feeding schedule, nor do I follow any guideline other than DS' cues. He's 10 weeks, and he knows when he is hungry and when he is not. He typically does not take more than 4oz per bottle, but the number of bottles may vary. Some days he is really greedy and wolfs down more. DS is very good with letting me know when's done, so I know I am not overfeeding him. Honestly, I don't think you can overfeed a baby! In the end, it all evens out. He is thriving and happy and content and growing just fine.

I basically just follow my gut with feeding

I wouldn't even worry about it. I never tracked exact ounces. My DS would vary each day so it never really mattered. They eat what they eat and as long as they are gaining when they go to the Dr it really does not matter and DO NOT go by any chart. each baby is different.

If your DS wants more at a feeding then mix up a little more. It might happen each night it might not but you need to listen to their cues and not any book or chart.

1. Yep, it's still 6 oz.
2. I was never worried about overfeeding my DD, but I was worried about underfeeding her. I've heard/read that there should always be a little formula left in the bottle...when my DD completely drained her bottle, I'd give a couple more ounces to her.

1) What ever the amount of water we used was what I considered the size of the bottle. If it was 6 oz of water it was a 6 oz bottle, if there was an oz left, we said he drank 5 oz.

2) He will guide you. I was paranoid about overfeeding and thought felt like we were giving him so much. I based it on what would make him last 4 hours and it worked for us. He never looked for more and always finished his bottles. But when he started looking for for food before the 4 hour mark, we knew it was time to up the bottle size!

and yes, you know DS is in the 90th % for weight, but also is 90th for head and 75th for height. He is not fat by any means (maybe just a little milk tummy). He is just big LOL

1. Yes, it's considered 6 oz, but don't overthink it too much. If your son is hungry, feed him.

2. If he's still hungry, offer more. Babies will spit up what their stomachs can't handle. So again, if he's hungry, feed him. Don't worry about the amount per day. 30oz/day is perfectly fine. DS was always over the recommended amount early on but he's now he's long and lean, not overweight at all.

Still 6oz. I dont track daily ounces either..as long as my baby is happy & growing there is really no need to track & worry. Each day varies just like your day would..someday u may eat more or less then others.

My baby is 13 weeks and eating approx 6-7 oz per bottle, 4 bottles a day. Some days he gets 24ozs, which according to his weight is "too little"...but he is satisfied.

If you put in 6oz of water and 3 scoops of formula it's still a 6oz bottle even though it looks like more. You just added volume with the addition of air and water. I don't go by what the bottle markings say, I go by how many ounces of water I put in. That's more accurate.
