Do you always listen to your ped when it comes to food?
DD is 7 months and my per recommended giving her pasting with olive oil for lunch. Why should I give her pasta that has no nutritional value, when I can give her real food?
He also suggested cutting down her formula to 20 oz. Why wouldn't I just let her gradually take less as she wants less?

Feed your baby what you want. DS cut down to 20 oz (or less) on his own, but not at 7 months. Probably closer to 9? And there's no need to give pata, if you prefer fruits, veggies, cereal, whatever. Maybe the dr was just trying to recommend something soft? Either way, seems strange.

Re: Do you always listen to your per when it comes to food?
Yes, I always listen to them, but NO, I don't always follow the pediatrician when it comes to food.
But I disagree that pasta has no nutritional value- children need whole grains in their diet and the olive oil is good fat. 50% of their calories should be coming from fat.
But you have to do what you feel is best. I was worried about my daughter not gaining any weight for almost 7 months. He suggested putting cream in her oatmeal and I just don't feel comfortable doing that. However, I gave her lots of avocados, olive oil, pushed extra whole milk and cheese, and now she's gained an entire pound in one month. I didn't need the cream.
So listen to what they are saying, but no, you don't need to accept what they say.

No, but my twins are preemies. My pedis office didn't adjust and I didn't know that at the time. We were told to start solids at 4m. They were less then 2m adjusted, but 4m actual age. Their high risk dr who we only saw every few months had a fit.

Re: Do you always listen to your ped when it comes to food?
No, in fact, I hardly even discussed food with him. He would ask if she eats well and a variety, i'd say yes and that was that. He would tell me foods to avoid until certain ages and I listened to that. I also EBF, so as long as she was gaining well, he never discussed ounces or feeding habits either. I started solids at closer to 7 months...the ped said I could start between 4-6. She was always healthy and gaining well, so I followed my own instincts.

Re: Do you always listen to your ped when it comes to food?
Um no. Some pediatricians just arent up to date on nutrition in my opinion. I just nod my head and then feed my kid what I want.
Like you, I agree that pasta isn't all that healthy/nutritious. But babies do need healthy fats, so pile on that butter, olive oil, etc. :)

No. He said I could start rice cereal at 4 months. I waited until 5 months, skipped rice and went to oatmeal cereal. He said do cereal for a month and then bring in purees. I did it for a week.
He said I could start with whatever I wanted, which I know I can, but I choose orange veggies from what I've heard.
I take everything he says, listen to it and then use my own judgement....as far as food, sleep training, etc etc Nobody knows your baby like you do.

With food nope and only 20 ounces?! My 7 month old would be starving. I feed till full with formula and solids and plan to continue doing so.

if I didn't feel comfortable with something they were advising, then no I wouldn't necessarily follow what they were telling me.

Not really, I do enough research on my own when it comes to food to know what I want to feed my kids....What about trying quinoa or bulgur wheat instead of pastini?

Lol, whenever I ask my GI doctor for specifics regarding how to deliver meals, etc., he always tells me (encouragingly) that I'm the parent and with that comes the flexibility to do whatever I think works best!

Re: Do you always listen to your ped when it comes to food?
I guess I am in the minority, but yes. I just really respect and trust her. My son is very skinny and long. She never told me to do things to fatten him up. He is very mobile and verbal , so I think everything is working. Pasta with oil actually does sound healthy, however my ped said to keep my ds on fruit and veggie purees until 9 months. I do let him eat puffs or take tastes of things.

For the most part yes, but my ped never gave a ton of specifics. DD was ebf so there was no discussion of ounces or anything. They suggested solids at 4 months but were fine when I let on that I would wait until 6. They suggested meat, yogurt, finger foods at 8 months which I did and okayed everything but honey at 9 months.
If something they told me went against my own research or just didn't seem right, I would listen to my gut. I gave pastina around 8 months and just mixed in with her purees usually. DD was starting to drop nursing sessions so I liked adding something to fill her a little more than straight purees and it was good to introduce something with a little texture to it.

Nope just went with my gut. I did ask about yogurt yesterday b/c of the diary but I already new it was ok at 9 months. I forgot To ask about cheese but she are a quesadilla yesterday and is fine. She'll be 9 months on the 23rd and eats everything. Barely any more purées. Pasta, peas, carrots, sweet potato, Cheerios, puffs, yogurt, cheese, yogurt melts, water in a sippy, he said I can start meats but haven't yet, really anything I feel like giving. I don't give nuts or honey this young. I personally don't think there's anything wrong with pasta if given appropriately. Everyday probably not a good idea. A few times a week sure why not. There's whole wheat pasta veggie pasta. Etc. There will be a time, most likely, that they will refuse everything and only want 1 thing to eat for months and it will drive you crazy. Don't let what the dr tell you drive you crazy now. Do what feels right to you.
