Amniocentesis

For BTDT moms, if you had it done are you glad you did it? If you didn't, did you have another test or forego it altogether?

I'm 39, pregnant with twins after two IVF cycles, so my GYN mentioned doing one if there were findings on the ultrascreen. I am on the fence.

Edited for more details.

I had it done. I do not regret it one bit. I never had the 12 week scan because of the high rate of false results.

The stress leading up to the amnio is way worse than the actual procedure.

I didn't do it. I was 33 and got preg after two rounds of Ivf. I know there's a miscarriage risk, my doctor confirmed that, and I didn't want to risk it after everything I had been through. I did the cvs test and if gd forbid that came back abnormal I would have done it but didn't want to jump to something so invasive unless I had cause for concern.

Edit bc I'm an idiot. See the thread below. I didn't do an amnio OR a cvs. I didn't do anything invasive for fear of mc and there was no cause for concern.

Amniocentesis

Both amino and CVS have about a 1% chance of miscarriage. We met with a genetic counselor and decided that if the risk as assessed by the ultra screen was higher than the risk of miscarriage due to a diagnostic test then we would have a diagnostic test preformed. My ultra screen results showed I had the risk of a 20 year old so we skipped the diagnostic test. I am 37 and high risk and my maternal fetal medicine specialist agreed with our decision.

Cvs doesn't have any risk for miscarriage. It's an ultrasound combined with a blood prick to your finger. I was told the amino had a higher risk than that's too.

CVS DOES have a risk of miscarriage- It requires taking a piece of the chorionic villus. It is an invasive procedure. This describes the basics:http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/chorionic-villus-sampling/MY00154

What you are referring to is the first trimester screen. It is a non-invasive screening test that looks for trisomy 13, 18 and 21 (finger prick) and uses ultrasond to measure the nuchal fold thickness. During the ultrasound they look any abnormalities/markers.

I had an amnio with my first and a CVS with my second. I have absolutely no regrets on either for the peace of mind those tests gave me. I was 38 with my first and 40 with my second, both a product of infertility treatments, as well as a history of losses due to chromosome issues.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Re: Amniocentesis

I had one.
I was 35 when I got pregnant, 36 when I delivered.
The doctor suggested it and I wanted it.
DH and I knew from the start that we wanted to know with 100% certainty what was going on.
I didn't want percentages, 1 in whatevers, I wanted to know.
It was the best thing I ever did and I would do it again in a heartbeat.
The procedure itself was nothing. I was very nervous- I don't like needles, I have medical phobias, etc but to be honest, a blood test hurt more. By the time I flinched it was done.
And after getting the results that all was ok I was able to relax and really enjoy the rest of my pregnancy. That peace of mind was so worth it to me.

ETA_ this was 4 years ago and the MaterniT21 was never offered to me. I am not sure if it was available at the time or not.

Re: Amniocentesis

I had an amnio with #2. It wasn't bad at all. BUT it DID miss my DD's chromosomal deletion. Apparently, the amnio only looks for LARGE chromosomal problems. My DD has a "microdeletion", so the amnio didn't see it. With #3, I had a CVS done (wanted earlier results), and they did a microarray on the tissue, so they looked much closer at the chromosomes. That is the same test used to diagnose DD. The CVS hurt much more than the amnio, but I'm glad I had it done. If your insurance will cover the microarray, I highly suggest it (it can be done whether you have amnio or CVS), as the results from the standard test is not in depth enough. JMO.

Feel free to FM me if you want to.

I'm 35, will be 36 when I deliver. I decided to do the Maternit21 test before doing anything invasive. I also had the NT and blood work with that. All came back negative. None of those give 100% certainty, but the Maternit21 is something between 97-99% accurate for many chromosome abnormalities. If it had come back positive, I would have probably done more invasive testing.

Re: Amniocentesis

Thank you all. It is still a lot to think about. I think I will see what happens at the ultrascreen and go from there.
