What's the difference between Chorionic villus sampling and Amniocentesis?
Do you get a Amniocentesis if the CVT came back with poor results?

They are ultimately the same test. The CVS can be done sooner and is slightly higher risk of m/c. CVS tests your placental tissue whereas the amnio tests the amniotic fluid. They both have an extremely high (somewhere around 99%) accuracy rate.

It sounds like you wouldn't need the amnio if your CVS test came back with positive results.

My SIL had the CVS and it showed DS. She proceeded with the amnio and it yeilded the same results. She just wanted confirmation. But no, you can pretty much rely on whatever the CVS has but there is no reason to have it unless the ultrascreen comes back with poor results.

Why are you planning on these tests? Are you over 35?

Re: What's the difference between Chorionic villus sampling and Amniocentesis?
I had the CVS done with my last pregnancy. It was NOT painful in the slightest, even though they needed to go through my belly since they had the wrong chart when I got in there. Usually they do it vaginally. There is no pain. You do need to be on bedrest for 24 hrs following the procedure but I felt fine. No cramping whatsoever. I have another one scheduled on Aug. 4th and I pray it goes as smoothly.
As for the miscarriage rates, there are two reasons for this. CVS is not as common so there are less procedures done. Thus higher raters of miscarriage. Plus its done between 10 and 13 weeks which has a HIGHER rates of miscarriage than the 16-20 weeks that an amnio is performed in. If you have a practictioner who is very well versed in CVS, you should be fine. Luckily for me, the guy who pioneered the procedure is here in Los Angeles and his miscarriage rates are extremely low.
Hope that helps- feel free to FM. I really believe CVS is less invasive, plus you know earlier so if there is something tragically wrong(ie, the child needs surgery in the womb, isn't going to live a few months past birth) you have more time to make decisions and plans.
ETA for some really bad spelling.

No, I'm 30. My doctors all tell me I am perfectly healthy.
I'm just overly worried. OMG! I am turning into my mother. I swear she spent half her life worrying about me. I am certain I am going to be the same.

Re: What's the difference between Chorionic villus sampling and Amniocentesis?
The PPs are correct in demonstrating the difference. I did not have CVS, rather an amnio. However, I personally did not find the amnio invasive at all. Risky and uncomfortable? Yes. It is a procedure that requires you to sign off on and there is a risk of m/c though I was never really concerned for it - I was more concerned for the results.
If you have any questions regarding the amnio, please feel free to FM.
