Coming home from vacation... question
Which would you prefer?
DH likes to save money, which I understand, but sometimes picking a bad time to come home from vaca to save some $$ is tough.
We go to Aruba every year. My IL's have a timeshare.
Last year when we came home it was a nightmare so maybe that's why it sticks in my head to leave on a Saturday. My younger DS was 1 at the time and screamed so much when we were on the tarmac waiting to pull in at Newark (45 mins), which then caused a moody guy to yell at another little girl for bumping into him by mistake which then caused a fight with her grandfather and him then adding her father. Fun, Fun! As my DS is still screaming and the fight is going on my older DS (3 then) fell asleep on me bc he was exhausted. Anyway, finally get off the plane and then my 3 yr old pukes all over the airport. Ugh!
So, this year they have a flight back at 6PM Saturday or $200 less we can take the flight home Sunday. Probably won't be home till midnight and I have work, DS has prek, etc.
I just think for $200 more I'd rather have the Sunday to be home and have a day, clean, relax and get ready for Monday.
Thoughts?

Honestly do what is the better time for you. Save money elsewhere. At least you can say you're not paying to stay there.

DH and I prefer coming home late on Saturday nights so we have all day on Sunday to relax and do laundry. I try to get flights were we are back home by about 10-11 pm.

True. Yes, my IL's are paying for us to stay. I can't complain. I know it's tougher in Aruba to fly home on Saturdays too vs Sundays, but I just hate coming back late on Sunday night with overtired kids and then get them straight to bed with tons to do on Monday including work

Flying into ANY NY area airport in the evening or night is bad and you will have delays. The air traffic gets worse as the days goes on so I would see if you could fly back earlier in the day either day.

Not really an option with Aruba. It's always later flights and there's only 2 options those days. Usually on 2 bc there aren't a ton that fly out of there. Small airport.
Earlier flight is only 2 hours earlier and $400 more. That's not worth it then to pay possibly the $200 more on top of that for a Saturday over Sunday.

I work from home so can't really take off. I just don't want D's to miss another day of school either since he's taking the week off. He's in prek and goes 5 days a week.

I would definitely come back Saturday and pay the extra money. I've had bad experiences with flight delays coming home, one that resulted in us not getting home until 4am. I know that doesn't always happen but I wouldn't risk it to save $200. Especially if you have to work the next day and have young children who need to get their sleep.

I've done it both ways.
Personally, I'd do the extra day & deal (but not because of $200, just because I love to extend my vacation to the last possible moment).
I went on a cruise where we came back on a Saturday, which was nice too.

Is it $200 total or $200 per person? For $200 I would rather come back on Saturday and have Sunday to regroup. If it's $200 per person, I would come back on Sunday.

I'd come back Saturday - the $200 is worth the peace of mind transitioning your LOs (and yourself) back into the M-F routine.
We're planning a trip next month with three kids and we're coming back on Friday night so we can have Sat AND Sun to recuperate/do laundry/rest from the vacation.
My neighbor is a teacher and is excellent at squeezing out every last drop of vacation from her time off. They will drive back to NY at 3am on Monday after spring break and everyone gets up at 7 to go to school, work, etc. I know that wouldn't work for my family.

man i miss that place!!!
I do love Aruba and we go every year. Plus, sometimes with the kids staying an extra day is more exhausting. Moving our stuff to my IL's room to stay a night too. If we didn't have the kids then I'd stay longer if I could.

Leave Saturday. $200 is not that much in the grand scheme of things. It will make your life so much easier to have the day off in between.

I would totally come home on Saturday. Peace of mind at home and getting everyone settled is so important to me.
Just reading your Sunday scenario gives me anxiety!

I would definitely come home on Saturday. When we go to England to visit DH's family we always try and get back on Saturday, or at the least early Sunday morning so we can unpack, do laundry, food shop, and just get ready for the week.

Coming home from vacation... question
I have done it both ways. I usually like to extend my vacation as long as possible and still would if it was just me but DH likes to have a day of rest before going back to work. Now with 2 kids it is much better coming back a day early.

I always pick the best time for our kids vs by cost. Our kids have a rough enough time on planes. I personally prefer right before or after lunch.
That being said, we often fly back on Sundays but in the early afternoon in order to maximize vacation time. I would never fly somewhere where we return at midnight though. I do know families who book sleep time flights on purpose though. Every kid is different.

No choice when flying home from Aruba. Small airport and there are only night flights. It was either 4PM or 6PM and the 4PM is $400 more so for 2 hours earlier I'd rather take the later one.
