Toddlers & Thanksgiving
What foods are you making for your little ones on thanksgiving? I need ideas besides plain sweet potato, cooked veggies and turkey.
any other suggestions to keep them occupied at the dinner table?

Toddlers & Thanksgiving
How old? DD is 2 and has always eaten what is served, except for her first Thanksgiving when she wasn't on solids yet.

she is 15 months, but i'm a natural/organic type mom... don't want to give her all the sugar/butter that is loaded in most of the foods. Just looking for some more healthy alternatives for kids.

Re: Toddlers & Thanksgiving
bWe have tons of sides at thanksgiving so I'll just pick and choose what I think DD can or will eat. Probably turkey with gravy, baked sweet potatoes, green bean casserole, turnips, cranberry sauce.
If your looking for more simple things maybe sweet potato mixed with applesauce. Here's a recipe for a simple cranberry sauce with apple juice.
If you're worried about keeping her at the table while everyone eats maybe bring a coloring book and crayons to keep her busy once she'd done.

Toddlers & Thanksgiving
This is DS 2nd Turkey day.
He eats what we eat. If its good enough for us them its fine for him is my theory
And its one day. So if he has a little more sugar etc then oh well it wont hurt him.

Toddlers & Thanksgiving
Im going to let dd eat what everyone is eating. I like to feed organic clean food eats as well, but for holidays and birthdays i let her eat what she wants. Shes 17 months and i feel that everything in moderation will make for a happier baby and a happier mommy. I want her to try certain things and know that certain foods are only for special occassions and not everday.

DD is 2 and eats what we eat, just like any other day. We eat natural as well. I don't use processed products for thanksgiving so there's not much of a difference. Maybe a bit more fat, but still real food.

They eat what we eat. It's 1 day. Your choice- but IMHO- don't make yourself crazy.

DS is 2 and there will be plenty he will eat--he likes turkey he will have some veggies and hopefully soem sweet potatoes or stuffing. He has his picky days but turkey (which I will call chicken he always will eat) so depends on his mood lol

This. I think it's important for them to know that it's OK to indulge a little on special occasions. That's just IMO though.

Toddlers & Thanksgiving
They will eat what we eat. Other than mashed potatoes and stuffing), most of the things we serve don't have sugar or butter in them (veggies, turkey, ham).

This. My DD is almost 2.5, I plan to give her a little bit of everything served (turkey, ziti, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, turnips, green bean casserole, spinach, stuffed mushrooms, cranberry sauce (homemade), stuffing, peas, & carrots). I don't expect her to eat it all, but she's pretty good with trying all foods offered to her, and I think if she has a variety, it will keep her busy while we eat.
I think it's important to expand her palate and these are definitely foods we do not eat regularly, so it's a good chance for her to expand her food horizons! She's a foodie in the making!
EtA: also, this is all homemade, between me, my mom, aunts, and cousins, the only thing that comes from the box is the Stovetop (but there is homemade stuffing as well). So while it may have fat & sugar, at least it's not all processed.

Re: Toddlers & Thanksgiving
DD is a young toddler only 13.5 months so she will be eating simple. PLain sweet potatoes, steamed string beans etc... mostly because she still eats with her hands and doesn't like sauces.

Re: Toddlers & Thanksgiving
We are having a very small dinner so she will be eating what we are eating--mashed potatoes, homemade Mac n cheese, green bean casserole, corn on the cob and chicken. Everything is organic and made from scratch (no canned soups). I typically do not make pasta, but figured its a special occasion so why not indulge.
By the way, butter (real stuff, not margarine, etc.) is great for toddlers, but I agree sugar isn't. I'd give her very small portions of the sugary stuff just to try if she makes a fuss :)

Re: Toddlers & Thanksgiving
Thanks. I am going elsewhere for thanksgiving, and they are not even making it homemade, they are catering and I am just not sure I feel comfortable letting her indulge even this once. If I was cooking it, or maybe the grandparents, I would allow it like I will be doing for Hanukkah and Christmas. I just want to be prepared for Thanksgiving. I guess i will just try to make her a little of everything on my own and see how that goes. Just a lot of work for a little person! At 15 months, I don't think she'll know the difference just yet although she does like eating whatever we are. But at home we try to stay natural and just indulge on holidays/restaurants, which I'm sure I'll allow her to do in time.

Re: Toddlers & Thanksgiving
Can you feed her before you go or pack her own lunch? It doesn't need to be thanksgiving food per se...maybe sweet potato, veggies and chicken?

Toddlers & Thanksgiving
My older DS is 2.5, and he will be eating what is served. We are usually a pretty healthy household, but on holidays and other special occasions, I let him eat whatever- it only ends up being a handful of days per year.

This echoes how I feel... It is a holiday, so while I probably wouldn't be all "hey here is a pound of lard, dotted with butter and topped with melted candy", if the mashed potatoes are really rich, and the brussel sprouts are mingling with some bacon, enjoy! It'll be back to the usual gruel soon enough ;)
