Infant with painful gas - help!

5 week old DS occasionally has painful gas. It's mostly at night and it's heartbreaking - he cries in his sleep, thrashes around, whimpers. We talked to his ped and we give him Little Tummies gas drops a few times a day and I'm very careful about what I eat (I'm EBFing). We haven't tried gripe water yet - have people found this helpful? We also give him a daily probiotic. Other than the bouts of painful gas he is mostly content. He is gaining weight well, pees and poops often, and has happy, alert time daily. I just hate to see him in pain from the gas Chat Icon Any suggestions?

My son had a gas just as you described. I EBF as well watching dairy was big at first. Gripe water was very effective as well. Bicycles also helped!

Bicycle legs were very useful. Gripe water was useless for DD, but the gas drops were a lifesaver.

I cut out dairy and gluten and within two weeks my daughter's gas went away. It's worth a try!

Bicycle his legs, lay him on his tummy for a few minutes (supervised). Poor baby. He will grow out of it but I know how hard it is.

DD had this really bad. Gripe water really didn't help us - but its worth a try. The only thing that would soothe her was holding her on her tummy.

The best thing for her was growing out of it - by 4 months she was pretty much gas-free (well the painful kind at least).

Re: Infant with painful gas - help!

gripe water is for upset tummy, not really gas so i would stick with drops before and after he feeds

also frequent burps, and baby yoga did wonders for us

I tried gas drops with DD and found they really didn't help. The pediatrician said not to bother with gripe water.

I haven't tried either of these yet but the pediatrician told me to drink chamomile tea and to give some to DD before a feeding. Also, to give DD Mylanta. I'm obviously talking about miniscule amounts.

Bicycle legs and pushing and pulling legs back and forth seem to alleviate some of the discomfort.

Bicycle legs and have him lay on his belly with his butt up in the air for a little while.

Re: Infant with painful gas - help!

DD1 also had this problem. In hindsight I don't think I burped her enough before putting her down. With DD2 she also had a few fussy nights. I started really making sure to get a good burp as well as keeping her on my shoulder for a good 10 minutes after a feeding. So far it's been successful Chat Icon .

I would also keep an eye on your diet, I remember with DD1 chocolate was out of the question! Bummer at the time lol
