Sorry this is long, but not sure if anyone has any input.....

I was born with a congenital heart defect that's been closely monitored during pregnancy. Fortunately, it's been fine and there has been no change during the pregnancy. Due to having placenta previa, I have to have a C-section. There have been several meetings about my situation at the hospital- anesthesia department wants to put in an arterial line before the section, my cardiologist doesn't feel I need the invasive cardiac monitoring and is trying to spare me from having to go through it. In any case, at their final meeting this morning my cardiologist informed me anesthesia will not waiver. Therefore I will have an arterial line put in before the C-section and after surgery I will have to be in the Cardiac Care Unit for the first 24 hours. I am SO upset. My cardiologist said they will bring the baby to me to see her, but to me that's not the same. Has anyone been in CCU (at North Shore) after delivering? Can the baby still room in? What about husbands? I'm so frustrated that my cardiologist doesn't feel I need this and was overruled by anesthesia Chat Icon

No experience with this but I'm sorry you have to go through that. I know it's not ideal and how you visioned welcoming your baby into the world but I assure you nothing will out a damper on having your baby. You will be blissful.

I don't have any experience but also wanted to say that I'm sorry you're dealing with this. It def stinks but it's only 24 hours and then you have the rest of your life with that child.

And I hate to say it but it could always be worse...
Some girls little ones had to be in NICU in an entirely different hospital than they were, at least they will bring the baby to you. Keep your head up :)

Just wanted to give my support. I can understand your frustration at the situation, but keep your eye on the prize - walking away with a healthy little baby!

And for what it's worth, it might be nice to sleep and relax those first 24 hours. You will not be able to move for the first 12 hours anyway, so it's really just another 12 hours. And then, your LO is going to keep you up for many many many nights to come. Getting a little sleep might be nice!

Thanks for making me see the positive!! I think the initial shock just got to me this morning and not to mention, I'm a little scared. Chat Icon But you girls are right, things could be a lot worse- I just want a healthy baby in the end and for me to be OK after the section.

Good luck, I was born with a congenital heart defect myself, I had to have 2 open heart surgeries before I turned one. I'll be praying for you. I'm not preggers yet, I'm just going through all the many tests to seek clearance.
Stay positive

I had tests too before I became pregnant- I know they can be nerve wracking. I hope you get through them all quick and can start your family. If you ever have questions or need someone to talk to, please feel free to FM me Chat Icon

Re: Upset

I'm so sorry. Even though it's good to try and look on the bright side, of course this is still so upsetting to find out.

Those first 24 hours will go very fast and it will be good for you to get some extra rest and care. Just keep pushing to get released back to the maternity section and hopefully they will do what they can as long as it's safe for you.

Though it is a disappointment, it really is for your best interest that you have the extra monitoring.

Not the same, but my son was transferred to another hospital an hour after birth. I stayed at the hospital he was delivered in. It really did not bother me, except for when my roommate was brought her baby the next morning and I wasn't. I was discharged 12 hours after giving birth and by the time I went home, showered, changed and made it to the hospital, almost 24 hours had passed.

Re: Upset

As long as they will bring you the baby, I think it will be fine! Also, it will go really fast!

My DD had to be in the NICU bc I had a fever before delivery and then her blood sugar was low. She was there my entire hospital stay (4 days). It sucked but looking back it went fast.

I would tell them that you really want to BF (even if you don't) and that way they *should* bring you the baby frequently. There is a BFing mothers Bill of Rights, and while I can't remember all the details of it, I think that if you're adamant, it will make sure they bring the baby to you. Maybe google it so you know your "rights"!

Good luck! Chat Icon
