Those with GD please come in......

I'm losing my mind a little! I was diagnosed as borderline GD- I failed the one hour, so I had to take the 3 hour. I failed hour one of the three hour, but passed hours 2 and 3. Since I see an endocrinologist for my thyroid already, I asked him to follow me with it. I have been checking my blood 6 times/day for the last 5 or 6 weeks. I keep a food journal and track my numbers. Up until a week ago, my number never went higher than 134 one hour after eating. In the last 2 weeks, I've noticed my number is a little higher when I wake up (used to be 70s-80s, now its usually 90-100) and has been creeping a little higher after eating (sometimes up to 145-154) I saw a nutritionist this week who drove me a little crazy- saw her on Monday and she told me what foods to cut out. Went back on Wed and then she yelled at me for not eating enough Chat Icon I'm starting to find it really difficult to keep my numbers low this week (I'm 34 weeks pregnant). I found a breakfast suggested by the nutritionist that has worked perfectly for me- 2 scrambled eggs with 1/2 avocado and salsa. 1 slice Ezekial bread. Its kept my numbers low (117-122) after breakfast. Today I eat the SAME thing I have all week and my number is 145!! (pre-breakfast it was 95)

Sorry for the long post, but I'm driving myself crazy- did anyone else find it getting really difficult to keep your numbers down? The nutritionist told me if I don't get the numbers down my endo is going to put me on insulin and I really don't want that. I don't know what else to do as I'm following the suggestions she made Chat Icon

I think each person is different. What works for me, may not work for you. I barely failed both the 1 hr and 3 hr and haven't really had any problems keeping my numbers w/in range. I also test after 2 hours, not 1. For breakfast I'll typically have half of a ww english muffin with low sugar pb and my #'s is usually 93-98 after 2 hours.

I've also found that my morning numbers are higher if I don't eat a little snack before bed - string cheese or a spoonful of pb for example.

Otherwise, as long as I keep the carbs in check and eat protein, I've been doing pretty well. My numbers have only been above range after eating something bad like pizza on occasion.

Do you walk after meals? I found that helps lower my #'s. DH and I went out to a nice meal yesterday and I expected my # to be higher but we went food shopping right after and just walking around the supermarket for nearly an hour gave me a 104 after 2 hours. I have to keep it below 120.

Good luck!

I actually tested today 2 hours after eating (my friend who had GD told me the same thing) and my number was 97. I wonder why my dr has me testing 1 hour after?

I think it depends on the dr. When I did the 3 hour, I had failed the 2nd hour (by a whopping 10 pts lol) so maybe my dr. wanted to see how I do after 2 hours? I have no idea lol. It all just sucks lol.

I was diagnosed early and the dr & nutritionist have been really happy with my #'s. I'm hoping that they will reduce the number of times I have to test which was something they mentioned as a possibility when i was first diagnosed. FIngers crossed!

I was also told to eat something before bed. I don't know if this made a difference but I had to check my keytones in the morning daily. That may have helped to make sure I was balance. I get checked again in a few weeks to do the 1 hour and hope I pass this time. I do remember that my numbers were hardly over 130 and then in my 30s week they made me keep it under 120 you just have to try different things and depends on your activity level.

Problem is I have placenta previa and I'm on bed rest. I don't think that's helping my numbers :(

Re: Those with GD please come in......

I had GD with both of my pregnancies. Sometimes no matter how well you eat during pregnancy with GD it is still hard to control. I wound up on insulin both times because diet was just not enough. I didn't like injecting myself and checking my sugar 6 times a day but I did it for my babies. GD during pregnancy is hard but its not the end of the world. If you have to take insulin remember its just for your pregnancy and your doing it so you have a healthy baby. On a side note, I lost my baby weight very quickly both times from being on the GD diet. I always say going on the GD diet was the healthiest I had ever ate. You will get through it. Do whatever you have to do for your baby.

Thanks. I'm following what the nutritionist said and I really don't mind the diet. I'm just getting frustrated when I follow it exact and my number still comes up higher than 130. Thanks for all the input! Chat Icon

You have to test 1 hour after eating? For me it was 2 hours after and had to be 120 or lower.

I was a borderline case too. Overally I did ok with the diet and my readings were never that bad unless I snuck a piece of cake ;) Shhhh!

Yeah 1 hour after eating. I've heard of a lot of people testing 2 hours after eating, so for the heck of it I tested at 1 and 2 hours post meal today. It was always under 120 at 2 hours. I'm going to ask my endocrinologist on Tuesday.

Another thing to keep in mind is consistency. If you have an occasional higher number (not excessively high but a little over range) it's one thing. If you are consistently getting higher numbers, that's another.
