14 Month Old Not Napping
Hello, My 14 month old son refuses to nap once during the day. He goes down to bed at 730pm and we wake him up at 7am. He used to take a nap at 930am-1030am and then another at 1pm-330pm. For the past week he has refused to take any of his naps. If we put him down for a nap he starts to scream and cry for at least a half hour. Any suggestions? We are scared this is going to harm his brain development. Please help! Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated. Thank you

Yes, I agree.
He probably doesn't need the early nap and then is overtired and doesn't fall asleep for the later one. Try putting him down around 12.

Yep, I would definitely try for just one later nap. DD has been on one nap since 10 months and doesn't go down until about 1pm.
I know while we were transitioning, if she cried when I put her down in the crib once, she would pretty much cry every time I put her down that day. It's like she remembers not wanting to go to sleep the first time and the crib just gets a bad connotation for the whole day.

14 Month Old Not Napping
Today we kept him up until it was time to take his afternoon nap at 1pm. When we put him down for the nap he started screaming for at least 20 minutes. We then kept him up. This past week he stayed up from 7am to 730pm with not even one nap. Is this healthy???? I thought babies need at least 1 nap.

Re: 14 Month Old Not Napping
As other pps are suggesting, go down to only one nap for the day. He doesn't need 2 at this point. Try for a 12ish, 12:30ish nap.
ETA: I would not take him out after 20 min. I would have left him in longer until he fell asleep. He will fall asleep. It's almost like you have to do CIO for naps, but it will eventually work.

Re: 14 Month Old Not Napping
my 14 1/2 month old used to take 1 or 2 short naps per day. But just recently is now taking 1 nap per day. Usually goes down around 12 or 1. DD will sleep about an hour or 2.

I agree with moving to one nap. My DD used to nap at 10am and again at 3pm, but at 10 months she was ready to switch to one nap, usually from 1-3:30.

Re: 14 Month Old Not Napping
Around a year, we also moved to the midday nap. There may be a little resistance to it as it's a new transition, but stick with it and he'll fall into the new schedule. He definitely still needs a nap at that age. DD always goes through little anti-nap phases (at 2 3/4, she's trying to ditch it altogether, but we're clinging to the nap for dear life). But I find it's usually a phase and if I keep trying, she'll start napping again.

Re: 14 Month Old Not Napping
It's definitely a phase. My DS used to do this, and still does at 2.5 years old. Some kids just don't need as much sleep as others and I find it unhealthy that my DS doesn't need more than 8-9 hours of sleep in a 24 hour period. I guess I would push back a nap around 1ish. Maybe put on a nice lullaby CD or DVD, that helps to unwind my DS down.

Re: 14 Month Old Not Napping
Around that age DS dropped his morning nap so I started the routine of lunch at 12:00 and nap at 12:30. It took a day or two, but it's been our routine ever since. He usually sleeps from 12:30-2:00.
HTH!
