For those who have done early potty training

I want to start potty training DD. She gets TERRIBLE diaper rash a lot and we can not pin down the cause. We eliminated dairy and that seems to help but she still gets it and it comes on sudden and strong. Even her daycare is perplexed b/c they are changing her diapers more often than the other kids and it still happens. Anyway, I need to find small underwear and everything I find online is 2T/3T which I think will be way too big on her, she is 17 months and 5th percentile in weight so super tiny. Any suggestions on underwear. Also, any tips for training in general? I want to take the weekend and get a start on it while I can devote my attention to her all day.

I didn't necessarily train DD early (she was almost 2.5), but in terms of the diaper rash DD had the same issue as a baby and I finally figured out that any wipe with aloe in it is what caused it. As soon as I stopped using wipes that had any form of aloe in them it immediately went away. I had all the same thoughts of why is it happening when I change her all the time......then I realized it happened bc I changed her all the time!

I switched to Target sensitive (purple pack) b/c they were the only aloe free wipes I could find and it was all gone. Read the labels on your wipes and check for aloe!

Can't help with the potty training but wanted to say maybe the wipes or diapers were causing the rash?

We have switched diapers and wipes multiple times. I have used target, seventh generation, pampers and honest diapers. We have also tried the wipes for each of those brands and the sensitive ones if they have them. I've given up on trying more options as far as that is concerned. I'm just going to attempt early potty training. I know many people who have had their kids trained before they were 2. I just hope she will take to it well.

Keep us posted on how it goes. I keep going back on forth on whether I want to train my almost 18 month old soon.

I just trained DD last week. She is currently 28 months, so I don't think I did it "early" but this is what I did.

(*We've had the potty out for a month and DD would sit on it and go whenever she felt like it, but I was never serious about training until last week).

Last Monday I decided no more diapers, and put DD in her "special new underwear" I told her we wanted to keep them dry and to tell me if she had to go. It was a mess! We stayed w/in feet of the potty, but she only made it in about half the time & pooped in her underwear.

Tuesday went better, I knew what signs to look for after all the accidents Mon. (She would grab herself for Pee, and hide for poop). I also didn't let her sit & play on the potty (one of my mistakes from Mon). Just put her on to do her business and then take her off. Also,I dressed her in long tunic tops or dresses and no pants to make it as easy as possible to get to the potty in time.

Each day after got better. We only wore diapers at night. By the following Sunday she was accident free and on Tuesday we even went out for the day (invest in a portable potty like the Potette 2in 1, ladies on here recommended it and its great!)

Bribery works well for us. Pee in potty earned her 2 M&Ms and poop on potty equaled a small toy or cupcake.

Buy lots of underwear...we went through 6-7 pairs the first day!!! I also bought tank undershirts (not onesies) to leave her bottom easily accessible.

I used old burp clothes to cover her high chair incase of accidents in the beginning.

I trained my daughter at 24 months, so not all that early. She got it within 1.5 days.I'm pretty sure she would have trained earlier if tried but I was too lazy

I used the three day method as my guide and it worked like a charm.

As for the diaper rash, does she eat refined sugars
/grains?Maybe try eliminating sugar out of her diet?

I can tell you the underwear runs SMALL
If you look at the weight for the 2T/3T it is way less than 2T/3T clothes.
I bought my DD the 2T/3T size without looking at the weight on the back and they were too small on her.
She barely wears a 3T, she is tiny, and she is wearing the 4T/5T with no issue.

I agree with those saying to try the 2T size. They are really small. I potty trained DS at 2 yrs 2 months & started with 3T undies. He started wearing 3T clothes over a year later.

Start training without the undies. I totally agree with the 3 day method, but 17 months does sound mighty young. Is she able to tell you she wants to go?

As for the rash: wash the kid's butt and below with warm water multiple times a day (but def after poop happens). Dry completely. DS was rashy & this helped him the best (along with converting to triple paste).

Look at her diet, does she eat strawberries, watermelon,grapes, mandarin slices, tomato sauce? The acid in those foods stay in. The urine and could be irritating her skin.
Bath time: does she sit in soapy water? If she does, stop and just let the water run while she plays. Soap of any kind will cause irritation.

The only thing that helps my DD is her sitting in a warm bath with baking soda. I fill the tub until it reaches just below her belly button and she sits in it for about 10 minutes. I use about 2 cups of baking soda to that about of water. You can do the same with white vinegar.

As far as underwear goes, my DD was trained at 26 months but is in the small side. She still fits perfectly into 18-24 months but they are getting short and the diaper area is big because there is no diaper.
The only undies that fit her are TCP. The 2/3 are tiny. Also Carter's but at first they were a little big. The Hanes are big but she wears them. My MIL bought a pack of Disney Princess from H&M and those fit the best. The elastic around the leg openings are covered.

Agree with the not using wipes. My PED suggested Viva paper towels with warm water.

DD started to tell me she had to go around 18 months. I'm sure I could have trained her if I committed to.

Most other countries have their kids potty trained as soon as they can walk. They call it "training" for a reason, if you really commit to it, you can teach her. It will prob be quite messy and frustrating for a bit, but it's def. possible. I highly recommend putting underwear on her and not looking back. I trained the weekend after her 2nd birthday. We went through about 10 pairs in the first half of the day (i pumped her full of liquids so she would have many opportunities to go), after she woke up from her nap, we only went through 2 pairs and she only had like 2 small accidents after that the first week.

And I agree that underwear runs small, especially the brand that BRU sells with the characters on it.

I know you didn't ask but my DD has such sensitive skin that the only thing that worked to get rid of rashes was to use cornstarch after wiping with wipes. The wetness of the wipes just is too irritating to my DD, still now at 5 years old she gets rashes if I dont use powder to dry up any moisture.

Did you try that?

IMO, try that b/c she is likely too young to actually properly potty train from what I have read.
