DD gets a homework assignment on Monday and it must be returned to school on Friday. She must read for at least 10 minutes every night and fill out the book information and how she liked the book.
DD loves doing her homework and fills in the week homework packet in under 1 hour for the week.

It was pure insanity by the end of the year. This is a public school. We were all crying by the end.
But that sounds like a weeks worth of work, not daily HW. You can't possibly do that all in one night.
That was every night. It stunk. I don't feel as if he learned much last year because he hated school.
That is insane. Too much for a kid that age.
My friend's children get hw like that and she is always envious that my district does not really believe in hw.

We definitely get more than 15 minutes of homework a night. My DS will have a math worksheet (Go!Math - double sided), 2 letter/handwriting worksheets, we're expected to work on our sight words (sometimes there's a worksheet for that) and then the reading. That's no including any extra worksheets/projects.
We're given a weekly packet and told what to complete each day and it's to be handed in on Friday.
this is pretty much what we have too.

I teach kindergarten, and we don't give close to an hour. I'd say it should take 15-20 min tops. We give the homework for the week which includes a math page front and back, and letter of the week handwriting page. All the homework is due on Friday.

If you have a child in Kindergarten..
In K, homework took like 15 minutes max. It was one page. Reading for 15-20 minutes was a standard, and still is in 1st grade. In 1st grade we have about 20 minutes of homework (2 sheets so far, one math one reading/writing).

I don't understand ANY school assigning more than 10 minutes of homework in kindergarten. It's ridiculous. My son is in first grade..he has one or two worksheets/night that take maybe 5-15 mins total to complete. After a full day of school thats more than enough in my opinion!!

We get a packet on Monday that is due on Friday. We read every day but DD said that they will start sending home a reading log this week. Homework takes about 10-15 minutes each day. Sometimes she bangs out 3 sheets in one sitting.

We get:
A new sight word every day. 1-2 page ditto to practice writing and recognizing the word. Write 2 sentences with that word.
Practice writing the letters of the week. 1 ditto. Write 3 words starting with that letter.
2-3 pages of math. Greater than, less than, practice writing numbers. Making numbers with 2 lots., etc.
10-15 minutes of reading.
Not including the reading, it takes us 20/30 minutes. 3 hours is insane.
We also get long term projects.

My oldest daughter went to kinder in Arizona. It was only half days and she had 5-8 pages of homework a night plus 10 minutes reading. It took 30-50 minutes to get through it all. My youngest DD is in Kinder now and we live in Ohio now. She goes all day and only gets 2 pages of homework a night plus 10 minutes reading, takes about 15-20 minutes.

I think what people are actually saying is that it takes the child 3 hours to finish it, NOT that they have 3 hours WORTH of work. I have actually heard this before and then the parent changed their tune to that the kid went and did something else and came back so it took a total of 3 hours from start to finish, not that they were working on the same thing for 3 hours.
Never has any of my children have 3 hours of non-stop hw, ever.
There is a tremendous difference between how long it takes a particular child to complete the HW and what's actually assigned. What's generally assigned is no more than a few minutes of work. I would be a little concerned if it took hours for my child to do what is actually assigned.
My DD gets a few handwriting sheets, a pretty easy math sheet, etc. Her teacher only assigns one thing per night and it's really for their benefit and nothing more..............none of the work needs to be handed in.
I agree. I never heard of 3 hours of hw being assigned (which would mean all the kids would take that long) and 3 hours it took the child (by either having it being too hard or they taking breaks).

It was pure insanity by the end of the year. This is a public school. We were all crying by the end. It would take my DS 3 hours. Perhaps he should have done this quicker, but it was honestly 15 pages of work a night. Way too much for a kindergarten child.
This year my son has a much better teacher. He does 20 minutes of reading, two pages of homework boxes, 4 pages of math dittos, reviews spelling words (8 of them are tested weekly), and reviews math facts. Homework takes him about 40 minutes for everything including the roughly 20 minutes of reading.
All in one night he would have to do this?
My kids always had special projects but they had at least a month to finish it and we would usually spend weekends doing that so week nights would not be so overwhelming.

all in its not more than an hour. Math sheets, sight word books, reading, writing work and that's usually it.. oh and some reading.
ETA: but we also have weekend bags which is slightly annoying. Which invovles new sight words/phrases, reading and occassionally bigger math assignments.
So every day there's something... we just figure it can't hurt so we go with it. But I 'teach' while he cooks and she gets frustrated because I'm a little to stern about get it done, do it again and pay attention, but I'm trying to get better at that...

We're asked to read or have him read 15-20 minutes per night. DS doesn't get homework every night. When he gets homework, it's usually less than 15 minutes of work.

DS gets hwk everyday including Friday; and, although it can be hectic, I actually like it. It can take 20 - 45 min. His teacher checks it everyday.
He will get Reading assignment (practice sight words or read an assigned booklet) & math hwk - worksheet from his book or math packet. Every other day he gets handwriting assignment where he has to write uppercase/lower case letter several times.
In addition there are items listed on the top of his sheet to work on that she doesnt check daily: Write alphabet 3x a week, write 1-10 3x/week, practice phone number & address, & this week added learn how to tie shoes.
The last part I add in when he doesnt have handwriting or a few minutes on the weekend or when we are driving to school or other places. So fat it hasnt been bad.
