Met with Dr. Kofinas yesterday

After losing my twin boys at 21 weeks due to an incompetent cervix, I decided to make an appt. with Dr. K. Based on what I read on these forums he seems to truly work miracles!

Based on my bloodwork, it turns out that I have:

MTHFR Gene Polymorphism - Homozygous
PAI-1 Gene Polymorphism - Heterozygous
ACE Gene Mutation - Homozygous

He put me on Metanyx, baby aspirin, Eskimo-3 fish oil, N-Acetyl-Cysteine and Pearl IC.

Dr. K seems to be a very well educated and experienced doctor. He is quite blunt, but after having a loss with doctors who sugar coated everything, I think blunt is fine! DH thought that Dr. K was cocky, I just think he's confident.

With all that being said, when I told my RE last week that I was going to see Dr. Kofinas, she told me not to. She said that he's very expensive and doesn't have a high success rate with IC. I was confused by this because everything I've read about him said the opposite.

My RE told me to see Dr. Jolene Muscat in Mineola. I do trust my RE so I'm going to see Dr. Muscat if only for a second opinion.

If anyone has any input on Dr. Kofinas or Dr. Muscat I would love to hear it! Does anyone have any experience with my diagnosis? I also have PCOS but I've know that for a while.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated, I'm so overwhelmed!

I'm so, so sorry for your loss Chat Icon

I actually have the exact same clotting issues as you and also pcos.

I saw Dr. Kofinas from 11 weeks on during my pregnancy with DS. I can tell you my DS would not be here if it wasn't for Dr. K. He's an amazing doc and knows a ton about thrombophilia. I would trust him 100%, IMO. They caught my cervix shortening at 16 weeks and had a cerclage placed at about 20 weeks. I know he has a special technique for placing the cerclage he uses that's different than other OBs.

I was on metanx, baby aspirin, Eskimo fish oil and lovenox 2 x a day, among other things, during my pregnancy. You would see him every 2 weeks throughout your pregnancy, unless any issues arise then you'd see him more frequently.

I HIGHLY recommend him!!! I absolutely love him and his entire staff!

Good luck to you!! Chat Icon

I agree! I started seeing him at 10 weeks with my DD. I love him and his office staff. He is blunt but I would rather know the truth than have someone sugarcoat it.

He takes out of network insurance and they will work with you on the cost of everything. Don't let what your RE said scare you away from him.

Re: Met with Dr. Kofinas yesterda

I always go with personal recs rather than Dr recs.... sometimes they do it for patient gain, ect.
Kofinas has an excellent rep here with the IF ladies! Take that into big consideration!
Good luck and sending you good vibes!

I truly believe my son wouldn't be here if it weren't for Dr. Kofinas (and God!). Yup, he's blunt and yup, he's confident (cocky) but ya know what, he's also the smartest, most genuine man I've ever met. He is personally invested in EVERY patient and even if he seems a little rough around the edges, it all pays off when he hugs you at your last appointment and sends you off to have your miracle baby. I agree with the previous poster that I trust him beyond words. If you have out of network insurance coverage, then I wouldn't think twice about being in his care. Good luck!

I would not even CONSIDER having another pregnancy without Dr.Kofinas. He helped bring my healthy DS into the world. He's amazing and literally one of the smartest people I know.

Dr. Kofinas is the man! He is a leader in his field! You will never experience a doctor that is as competent as Dr. Kofinas. The care I received him was unparalleled. You should read his statistics on his website. Nobody's comes close!

You go to him every two week. Then every week. Plus your obgyn but he only works with some obgyns.

Well for example with this past pregnancy I went every other day for beta testing. So where would I go initially for the frequent blood tests?

You don't need to come to office for blood, he will send you to Quest or whatever your covered lab is.

I thought his infertility office was only out if Methodist? So I can do appointments and monitoring in garden city? The website says only BK and SI. I think the prenatal said garden city?

His brother (also goes by Dr.Kofinas) is an RE who works out of Methodist hospital in Brooklyn. I'm guessing that's what you mean by 'infertility office'. I actually met with him for a consult when trying to get pregnant- very warm guy!

Anyway, Dr.(Alex)Kofinas (the perinatologist who everyone here refers to) has an office in the same location as his brother at Methodist hospital in Brooklyn but also in Garden City. You can see him when trying to get pregnant as well but he is NOT an RE so you would really just see him to build a plan for once you do get pregnant and he would start you on supplements... that kind of thing .. They do not do IUIs/IVF, he does not prescribe fertility meds, he's not that kind of doctor. His brilliance really comes in once you are already pregnant. He helps you stay pregnant as long as possible and will ensure you and the baby are healthy.

Oh wowwwwwww!!!! I didn't know this!
Okay so Alex K can do work ups for infertility or is that his brother that everyone is going to for that stuff? And he is in addition to a regular OB? Like, when I get preg, do I just see him or both him and OB? I was very high risk with my Ds so I def want extra eyes on my next pregnancy!

He does a thrombophelia panel which I'm guessing is what you mean. And yes, you go to him in addition to your ob because he does not deliver. The only thing is he only works with certain OBs so I would see him first and then figure our which OB he works with that you like. Do not use Dr.Pilliterri though, I cannot stress that enough. Fm for details.
