1,000 calories per day?!?!?
Does your toddler eat 1,000 calories a day?
I know this is what is recommended and I finally tracked a normal day for DD... and she is barely getting 500 calories a day. 500 calories is a lot less than 1,000 calories. And like I said, 500 is probably a good day. How am I supposed to get her to eat more? She just doesn't seem to want it!

My DD is like yours. There's no way she's getting close to what she's supposed to be getting, but she's an energetic, happy child, so I've decided to stop worrying about it.

Is your Ped telling you there is a problem??? If so then ask the ped what they suggest. If not then don't worry about it.

I am lucky if DD gets 500 a day- and that is on a good day- or a day with a ton of junk food.

Are you counting the milk?
Because if they are drinking 24 oz of milk a day, that's 450 calories.

hah you think she is drinking milk?!? She takes less than 4 ounces a day!!
Ped. is not worried... yet, but I am lol. I just want her to be healthy!! I might be over thinking it but it just seemed like an extreme difference to me. guess its normal/ok since she is fine without it.

I'm a dietitian. Calorie needs are always an estimate. And your tracking is also an estimate. So I wouldn't worry too too much. Children are really really good at maintaining their needs, unlike adults. They have an innate ability to eat when they are hungry and stop when they are full. So I'm sure she's fine. I'd be a lot more worried if you posted she was eating 2000 calories.

Try the pediasure shakes. My son is a horrible eater, he has 2 shakes a day and that helps.

Our DDs would get along well, I think! I still give DD 4 cups of milk per day in hopes of getting 10-15 oz in her.

Re: 1,000 calories per day?!?!?
So funny that you posted this. I have been freaking out the past few days when I saw that at 13 months DS is supposed to be getting 1,000 calories a day, when like your DD, he 's getting a lot less than this. Last night I tried feeding him dinner and he refused to eat it. He also only seems to be interested in eating puffs. He's not really interested in a lot of food i try to introduce to him (most recently was mashed up meatball). So I have to give him a Stage 3 jar just to get something into him. He is getting maybe 12 oz of milk a day. I hope this phase passes.

I agree. We can get too caught up in numbers. If she seems satisfied, is a healthy size and is energetic and happy, I'd go with your gut and assume all is well.

I've been stressing over this too! At DS appt last week he only weight 19lbs 10oz at 12.5months. The ped said use whole milk or even cream when making eggs, pancakes, etc. and try to up his calories where I can without actually increasing how much he has to eat bc he does not like eating! I've been putting butter on whatever I can. He drinks 16-18oz of milk a day so that helps. It's so stressful!!

Just want to add I've been trying to buy the highest calorie bread and yogurt since he actually eats that!

Is it wrong that I don't feel like adding butter, oil, sugar, and other ingredients to help fatten her up? I just wish she would drink her milk. That would be a lotta calories right there!!

I dunno, maybe you should add a little, I mean toddlers need lots of fat for growth and brain development so a little extra butter or oil is probably beneficial. Or giving whole milk yogurt or other high calorie foods instead of like vegetable slices.
But I wouldn't add sugar to anything, that's for sure

I don't add butter to things that wouldn't or normally get butter. I put it on pancakes, grilled cheese, pasta. It's healthy for him to get some fat. He loves fruit and veggies so he could use the extra fat and calories.
Do you warm her milk? I find that helps DS drink more.
