One Year Blood Draw

DS has to go for routine bloodwork (turned one on 8/26) and I was wondering where the blood is drawn - finger? arm? heel? Is it a horrible experience or fairly quick? Will be taking him to Sunrise Labs in E Setauket tmw. Dreading it.

It is the arm, but it is quick. DD cries more when she gets a shot! Chat Icon

Re: One Year Blood Draw

I think it depends on your doctor. DS had the finger prick which was actually pretty bad since they had to squeeze it for what seemed like an hour (probably a minute) to get enough blood. He was shreaking and I was almost in tears.Chat Icon
At around 2 we had blood taken from his arm for allergy testing and while it looked worse, it was over quicker.

Re: One Year Blood Draw

not to scare you but DS is 3 and DH is still traumatized over the 1 year blood draw.
The problem was the horrible horrible doctor. Our regular doctor had to go away and he was subbing (we weren't told until after we got to the appointment) he started off by telling us that it may be hard to draw DS's blood because he's so chubby (which he wasn't THAT chubby. it was more an insult to us, his overweight parents) i won't tell you what happened next, but the guy was horrible. DS had a bruise the size of an orange for the next two weeks!

we changed doctor's since then. just did his 3 year blood work. It was over in second. DS was hilarious. he was crying (as they all do) and yet kept looking at the needle, fascinated. I asked the nurse to show him the vial with the blood when it was done. Tears dried instantly cause he thought it was so cool!

since you''re going to a place where they do this for a living they will be fine. try not to be too stressed and distract your DC. we get more traumatized than they do!

One Year Blood Draw

We just took our 9mo old DD to Sunrise Labs in Babylon for a blood draw for allergy testing. They did it in her arm. She cried (honestly, so did I, but I cry when I get my own blood drawn, I hate needles), but the second it was over and I held her (DH sat with her, I couldn't do it), she was fine. They did have a little trouble finding her vein, she's super tiny, but once they did, it was over in a flash. She had a little bruise, but nothing that she noticed.

Just wanted to say good luck! I'm taking DS for his 1 year appt today. They do the blood draw at the office. I'm pretty sure it'll be a finger prick. He is not going to be happy!

Ours does finger, but it takes FOREVER! We did DD's blood work last year at a lab and even though she freaked out and they had to hold her down , it was over in seconds.

Good luck! We had to take DS to a Quest lab and they did his arm, but thank goodness I had a fisher price baby app on my phone, which distracted him the entire time. He only cried at the end.

My dd is the same way. She FLIPS as soon as we walk in the room.

We just did the blood work last week. Not going to lie, it was a pretty traumatic experience for all of us. They drew the blood from her arm. DH had to hold her legs, one nurse held her head and one arm, another nurse had the arm they were drawing blood from and then the dr. did the needle. I stood there helplessly trying to console her. I brought her favorite stuffed animal for her to hold while it was being done.

The good thing is that it will be over very quickly :)

It was really traumatic. I had him on my lap, held his right arm down ant helf the left one out for her to draw the blood, DH held his legs and he fought, screamed and kicked the entire time. It was really horrible. (And yes, they did take it from his arm.) But the lady who did it was amazing - so sweet and found the vein the instant she put it in his arm. So thank God for that!

For the one year blood test which we just did my ped office had a lab on site and it was a finger prick. Dd didn't cry at all! But the nurse squeezed her finger to collect all these drops of blood and she started to whine through it. But then she got a band aid (her first one) and was so excited and chatted the whole way home to her new bandaid lol.

That is the cutest thing ever. My son would have yelled at it until it came off, then eaten it. Lol!

DS had a tough time - they drew from his arm, tourniquet and all. Poor little lamb.
