Colds and school
Do you keep your kids home from school when they have a cold?
Just wondering because originally I was thinking I would send my DD since she has no fever but now I'm second guessing myself. She's stuffy and sneezing a lot and I don't want her to get anyone else sick but I also don't want to freak out the teacher. What would you do? TIA!

No because then I'd have to stay home from work and with three kids someone is always sneezing. If she had a fever then yes.

School said last year...fever definitely, really runny nose and coughing yes, minor cold no. There will always be parents who send their kid sick. Everything goes around the class. If you can afford to keep her home if she is uncomfortable great...why don't you wait until the morning. A lot of sneezing and no fever sounds like allergies though. The ragweed has been high for a bit. Could she have allergies?

I don't think it's allergies, 99% sure it's a cold. She always starts them off the same way. I guess I will see how she's doing in the morning. I just want to be considerate of her class. I remember when I was teaching I hated when the sick kids were in school yucking on everything. If she's just stuffy tomorrow and not much else I guess I will send her. But if she's really feeling icky and sneezing a lot, I may keep her home and err on the side of caution. Thanks girls!!!

My DD also has symptoms of a cold. We sent her today. I'm thinking fever would be the deciding factor.

I ended up keeping her home. She has no fever but she was pretty sluggish this morning and sneezing/coughing a lot. She just sounds icky. I figured I would give her the day to rest, her colds usually move though pretty quickly so fingers crossed that by tomorrow she's less sniffly and icky.

I don't usually keep the kids home for colds since they usually get them from daycare but, if they have cold symptoms, are exceptionally sluggish and overall not themselves - I keep them home.
There are a bunch of illnesses that have some cold symptoms going around - DS 1 is getting over a bronchial virus and DS 2 is getting over croup right now.

As long as there is no fever and she is feeling good other than the runny nose I would send her. My DD has been to school only 2 days so far, and she and now my younger DD already have runny noses! If I kept her home for a runny nose, at this rate she'd never be in school!!

I agree and would probably only keep her home if she had fever, was acting sick, or maybe excessively runny nose. I feel like DD has a cold Jan-April and each lasts for 10 days at a time, so if I keep her home every time, she'll never be in school.

If I kept DD home everytime she had a cold I wouldn't work from September until May. Based on what you said your DD has, I'd still send her.

Last year (pre k) I kept DS home when he had colds. he missed a ton of school. This year he has to go if he does not have a fever.

She's had no fever all day, thank god, but she rested a lot which I was happy about. She'll be going back tomorrow. She's had cough variant asthma since she was a baby and unfortunately when she gets a cold it REALLY aggravates her asthma and she often has uncontrollable coughing fits. I'm actually glad I kept her home, she was coughing so much she would've struggled today in school. I'll give her cough medicine in the morning to help her throughout the day tomorrow and hopefully she'll be okay all day.

DS1 used to have the asthma issue when he got sick. Luckily he grew out of it prior to entering K last year. But honestly if you keep her home everytime she has what seems to be a cold, she will miss 1/2 the year, especially as a non daycare kid (I dont mean this in any bad way as DS was a non-DC kid too), DS only missed 2 days last year due to colds but he has a runny nose most of the winter!
A bunch of my friends kids already have nasty colds after just 1 week of school! Ahhh the downsides of school!

Oh I totally realize that. She was feeling icky today though so I made the last minute decision to keep her home. She was mushy all day. Unfortunately for her she's going to have to muscle through tomorrow and deal because I won't keep her home another day. I put her to bed early to give her some extra rest.
This is going to be a looooong school year.
