2.5 months and he wants to stand?!?!?

Our baby is 2.5 months old. All week his new thing is he likes to stand up on his legs (of course while we are holding him). He doesn't fully have control of his neck so we can't put him in an exersaucer. I tried to see if it was just him wanting to push on something but laying him down and pushing on his feet, doesn't help. He screams until we are holding him up, facing the tv. The other day we had to do it for about 3 hours.

My question is...is there anything out there that he can go in that will let him stand that he won't hurt his neck or hips?

TIA

as per my kids physical therapist.. no baby should be in a standing position until they are pulling themselves up to stand.

Most babies will lock their legs when in that position, sending the message that they want to stand, but it is not necessarily the case. My twins neonatologist flat out yelled at me when he saw me do this with one of our twins. He was talking about, hips and muscles etc. I just listened :)

I don't know about the pt area of it all, but my DS was doing that pretty much at that age too. Actually, when I took him at the end of 4 months for professional photos, he refused to sit at all and I actually have a pictures of me helping him stand up. I always thought it was a phase

Then again, once he hit 10 months he started walking, so maybe not so much a phase as that he was just really wanted to be on the go.

As I said, I don't know if anything necessary bad comes of it, but ask your ped. If you're concerned. My guy is fine, but that doesn't mean every baby would be. Good luck!

:)

My ds was and is the same. I say let him do it, but mix it up with tummy time. My dr. said it is fine to let them do it for a few minutes at a time. My ds is 5 months and recently stood up off my lap to get a toy. I did hear from a physical therapist that toy walkers that you put them in are bad.

Just wanted to add, my ds pushes himself up with his legs. I just support him because he would of course fall over.

You specifically said standing, facing the tv. Are you sure it's not that he just wants to watch the tv? Does he want to stand at other times too? Do lots of tummy time so that he builds neck muscles and then you can put him in an exersaucer/jumparoo type toy. Also ask the pediatrician. They'll know best whats going on and what is ok and not okay for his development.

Re: 2.5 months and he wants to stand?!?!?

My ds is going to be 9 weeks on Sunday and he does the same thing sometimes. I think its just part of normal development. I googled videos for what a 2 month old should be doing and one video said that they will stand of course assisted by you holding them and will then bend knees and will push back up. I might not be explaining it correctly but google and you will see. (Dont ask me why I google videos on normal development lol I am a crazy ftm hahah )

Could it be reflux? Maybe he wants to be vertical because lying down burns his throat? Just an idea.

I was thinking this too. My DS would try to stand or he liked to be on his tummy. He hated being flat on his back. Maybe try something with an incline like the rock n play? DS was in that a LOT as an infant because he was happier on an incline. GL!

Thanks girls! I will mention it to the ped when I see him again next month. He is in the rock n play often although he is starting to outgrow it. He has reflux so I have him sitting on my lap but that's not good enough for him. He has to be standing. And it's not just the TV that he wants. He tried to put him in the bouncer or the rock n play and face the TV. He lasts a little while but not like when he wants to stand. He wants to stand facing outward. He's nosy like his mommy and wants to see what's going on. He's pretty good with his neck but still not 100%. I guess I'll have to keep doing what I'm doing and speak to the doctor on the 1st and see what he says.

Thanks girls! This made me feel SO much better knowing that it's common.

Re: 2.5 months and he wants to stand?!?!?

I think it is a natural reflex for them to want to stand at that age... DS did the same thing... We did have him in the exersaucer at a little over 2,5 months old but he had excellent head control...

Does he maybe just want to be in a upright position? Can you try baby wearing where you're standing and he's still more upright?

(FYI-I had no idea that letting them "stand" that young was bad. I'm sure I let DD do it from time to time, but I can't remember. )

I always kept my hands behind DS' head and let him stand. He'd push himself up and down often. He had really good head control from a very young age. He's 7 months now and has been putting himself in the standing position for a month... We had him in the exersaucer at 4 months because he loved standing.

Im not sure if its ok of not but you are holding him so i wouldnt worry. I used the bouncy seat for my dd with reflux. You can probably start him in the bumbo in a few weeks. My girls were in it from about 3 mo for short periods of time. My one dd was standing and moving her legs like walking from 4 mo. While being held of course.

Just a little more insight... Many babies show a strong desire to stand at a young age. My DS did something similar to this. However, my ped told me that crawling is an important step in development, as it is linked to strong reading and verbal skills later in childhood. I thought this was nuts and didn't make much of it. When my next door neighbor saw my son speed-crawling at around 11 months, she remarked that he'd be a great reader. Her husband is an ER physician but takes an interest in childhood development. This piqued my interested, as my ped had said something similar...so I looked it up and it turns out that there are several scientific articles showing a link between crawling and superior reading skills. Google it if you'd like! So while crawling isn't necessary for every baby and it doesn't mean that every non-crawler won't be a great reader, there does seem to be some sort of benefit for crawling babies later in childhood. So definitely encourage tummy time!!

Like others have said, I wouldn't encourage your LO to spend much time in any position they can't get into themselves. I made this mistake with DD ,letting her practice sitting and standing by placing her in that position, and it contributed to some motor delays. There were other factors that led to her delays but I know in hindsight that I didn't help things when I did that. Definitely do tons of tummy time, it's so important at this age for lots of reasons. As for pp's comment, DD"s physical therapist told us about connections to not crawling and possible later difficulties with both reading and writing. Tummy time and crawling helps develop the tracking needed for reading and crawling develops the hand muscles needed for writing. I'n not saying I would never do it, but I don't think I would do it for more than a few minutes at a time.

DD was like this. She always like to be standing on my lap at any early age—2,3 months. We did the exersaucer by 4 months. She ended up standing on her own at 7 months and walking by 9.
