Experts on PGD, please come in...

So I am 32 with a low amh and slightly elevated FSH leading my new RE to believe that my ovarian reserve is low and we are at our end. He said I may get only a few really good eggs from IVF and that I am not a candidate for PGD bc the process can potentially damage the one or two good quality embryos that I may produce. Does this make sense? RS o NY seemed very lax with PGD and said that it is a must with me being that my quality is low and that I am at risk for miscarriage if I don't weed out the bad ones. What the hell should I do? I am worried I will do IVF without PGD and have failed cycles=loss of time and money but on the other hand I understand how the new RE does not want to risk any potential good embies. Has anyone heard similar about PGD?

I have no experience with this, and I'm so sorry that you are going through this. I think you have to try to do as much research as you can on your own, but like so many things in the medical field you can find hundreds of doctors on both sides of the argument. It will (likely) really just come down to whether or not you trust your doctor.

Re: Experts on PGD, please come in...

My RE said that PGD can potentially damage embryos, but i thought he said it was a failry low chance. I guess i can see what your RE is saying - that you are probably only going to have a small amount of embryos to begin with so he doesnt want take the chance, no matter how small it may be, that the PGD could damage a "good" one.

I cant tell you what to do, but go with your gut. i find that it rarely fails you...even if you dont get the exact result you want, its the result that is supposed to be...at least thats how i'm looking at now...otherwise i probably would have jumped out a window with everything that i (we ALL!!) have dealt with!

best of luck!!

Don't do it! Read my past posts on PGD and you will see why.

We opted out. I'm 38 with levels in the normal range. ER yielded 8 follicles but I didn't want to risk damaging them.

This is a one shot deal for us so I'm hoping to have a couple to freeze.

I agree with your RE. It's too risky to do PGD when you're a poor responder, unless you are a carrier of something specific.

I posted about it on this thread, and there's some good information from other girls about it on there too.

One thing about genetic screening is that it's just not reliable or safe unless you grow to day 5, and even then it's no guarantee. And if DOR is your issue (like it is, as it is mine), you have to do that in a great (not good, not average) lab or you risk losing all your embryos. With egg quality issues, lab is EVERYTHING.

GL with your decision.

BTW they now recommend PGD done once the embryo grows to 5 days and then frozen so it becomes a frozen transfer. I did it, because i am a carrier of a gene slightyly above the gray zone but debate if we will try when we go for DC #2.

Go to the SART data and look @ pregnancy outcomes for donor cycles. This subset is less vulnerable to cherry-picking of patients or clinics that tend to have more challenging patients. Everyone is dealing with young fertile women, so it's the best basis of comparison for looking at lab alone.
