i never posted on here about this but I am having a tough time ! DD can't eat and she is 2 yrs old ! Chokes on everything
It started when she was 11 months old and I gave her a teething biscuit. I gave all 3 other girls the same and they did fine. Kaylee choked . She turned purple I was horrified ! A few weeks later although hesitant I decided to try it again. Well it happened again. I was so freaked out , didn't know what to think. I called her doc and made an appointment and they referred me to a dysphagia doctor. The doc noticed her gulping which is a sign of reflux so she is now on meds for that. We can only give her food that is mashed well or baby food . She is 2 now and can only chew things through mesh. The doctor says she doesn't know how to chew then swallow. she only chews once or twice then swallows . We are on step 2 of 6 ,1 yr later. I just feel like we will never get there. I feel alone. We have to be careful when people come over , that they know she can't have anything. I have to be careful when my other kids eat that they don't drop anything. I'm so scared ! Anyone else go through this?
Sorry my typing is not well . I'm just at a loss

Maybe you could contact a speech pathologist who specializes in feeding therapy?

Contact Early Intervention... She should get feeding therapy...

The dysphagia doctor is feeding therapy . She has been with them for a yr and has made progress . She used to never be able to tolerate textures of any kind without gagging but can now tolerate a lot more. I just don't see the light at the end of the tunnel.

She may have low muscle tone in her upper body... She may need more therapy then what she is getting... How many times a week does she get therapy...
My son has low muscle tone in his upper body. It has affected his eating... Aside from the sensory processing disorder with severe oral aversions... Was she ever seen by EI?

She goes once a week. What is EI? Wow low muscle tone?

I agree with EI. Early intervention. She may qualify for therapy in the home. Also I believe St. Mary's has an excellent feeding program however I am not sure what the criteria is to be a patient. Good luck. I don't have the number now but you can call early intervention in your county and request an evaluation.

Yes you should contact EI. They have wonderful therapist. Your dd could receive extra therapy on top of what she already gets, and you could have another professional to help you, show you tricks and more support.

I agree with everyone here - have your dd evaluated for feeding therapy. One of my 14 month old triplets has a feeding therapist come for an hour a week to the house. It is different from seeing a doctor. I thought because my kids were seeing a developmental pediatrician that they were being "evaluated" and didn't need ei. I was wrong, they are not one and the same. My dev ped said my son was fine. I felt differently and had him evaluated, only to learn that he qualifies for pt, speech, feeding and a special Ed teacher. You can do this on your own. Ei is a service of the state/city. any parent in NYS can request an evaluation. I had a great experience with my agency if you need a referral. If DD qualified the service is free. Good luck!

She should be working with a speech pathologist as well (they are trained in eating too- it's all part of it) and with EI it should all be free. They come to your house and work with her on her mouth/skills with swallowing/chewing/talking. i would look into it. and she is making progress it sounds like. just very slow. so i'm sure with extra help you can see an even bigger jump...

My DS went through something similar. He just turned three. At about 10-11 months, when we started table food, he began gagging on most foods. He was throwing up 3-4 times a week. I took him to a gastroenterologist and had him tested for soooo many things. Although he did have acid reflux, it was not the cause of the constant throwing up. We finally took him to a speech pathologist and he started feeding therapy. It made a world of a difference! He still throws up occasionally but not nearly as much. I would recommend having her evaluated. It might be a sensory issue with certain foods. They go through all the steps of how to chew, when to swallow, etc. FM if you have any questions.

Did the doctor do a swallow study to diagnose the dysphagia? Has there been a follow up study? My DD, whose symptoms weren't nearly as severe, was diagnosed with dysphagia at 7 months. She doesn't receive EI, because it was mild and just required liquids to be thickened. Your DD should certainly qualify for services through EI. Someone should be coming to your house to work on feeding. We work with Louisa Ferrara at Winthrop.She is a speech therapist who does only feeding therapy all day, and she is wonderful. She has great suggestions for dealing with all kinds of feeding issues.

Call E.I. (Early Intervention). Explain the situation. They can probably do an evaluation for speech & feeding.
Maybe even PT if she's low tone.
