Sectional Couch Help
Hey All,
Need help on finding an extremely dorable sectional for my living room (our daily use room)
We're had a tweed and my dogs nails detroyed it
We have microfiber and it shows EVERYTHING (in a red). Plus, it ripped in some spots in just 5 years (lots of wear & tear)
Now, giving you a little background:
we only have a living room, so it is used ALL THE TIME all day long
We are ok with the dog on the furniture. He is 6 years old, not changing now
We eat on the couch (snacks and such).
I have two very active boys who jump and such
I have a blue collar husband who comes home from work dirty.
So I'm not expecting my family to change BUT what material do you think would be suit our needs? Me and my husband are on the fence with leather.
Also, where would you go to look for a sectional? We're doing our whole living room over in Jan-Feb, so I want to get ideas now.
Thanks!

Re: Sectional Couch Help
I think leather is your best bet. Easy to wipe down from spills, pets and dirt. And it's durable.
Why are you on the fence about it?

Re: Sectional Couch Help
We have a very durable sectional from Pottery barn (Pearce sectional). Love it. Used often by all of us and our dogs. What's nice is they are zippered covers on all the cushions, that can be thrown in the machine and dryer. Very handy for your occasional dog vomit, or child vomit. They are not cheap, but they are well made. We have microfiber, I think...only negative is it feels very dirty if it gets crumbs on it, etc, you can feel every little thing on it. But it's great otherwise. Another hint, not sure if they still do this but if you say new homeowner you can get a discount (or if you open one of their credit cards too).
Based on your needs, sounds like leather might be better. Why are you on the fence?

Re: Sectional Couch Help
We're on the fence because we've never had leather and I have very traditional taste. but I think a brown leather would fit in.
Thanks for the feedback.
What brands do you recommend? I don't think Bobs is durable enough for my family. And Pottery Barn has a hefty price tag.
The current one we have is Raymore & Flanigan and it just didn't make it.
What about more of the premium brands like Lane or Broyhill? Do you think they'd be more durable?

Sectional Couch Help
I bought a couch from Levtiz back in 2006 but other stores still have it. Its Pleather base and tan microfiber pillows and the back pillows are different tones of brown microfiber.
We have a dog that lays on it all day long when we aren't home and a DS that is nuts!!!! We do not have any other room to hang out in so its used 24/7. We got the scotch guard on it and we just wash the pillow covers every now and then. After a wash it look new. The only thing I hate is that my dog is black so he shed and it shows on the tan.
I want to replace it with leather when the time comes but I worry about my dogs nails on the leather.

Not a big fan of leather but I think it's your best bet. We are thinking to replace our microfiber sectional in the basement with leather because of moisture issues.

Sectional Couch Help
We have a sectional we bought from The Place on rt110. We bought in 2006 and have only had to have it steam cleaned once. I can look up the brand when I get home. It's held up very well.

Re: Sectional Couch Help
We bought a leather sectional from Levitz in 2006 and it has taken a beating from everyday use, new baby, and a cat and it has held up very well. We knew we did not want a fabric couch because of the cat (he sheds like crazy and is declawed). The leather couch cleans very easily.

Re: Sectional Couch Help
I just bought a couch from seigermanns. they had this kind of microfiber that you simply wiped with a wet cloth and everything came off. He did it with a pen mark.
I didnt end up getting it, but i think i should have..
it was flexsteel furniture

Re: Sectional Couch Help
I think leather would also be your best bet. I have had Ashley furniture, raymour, bobs and Jennifer and I have to say the Jennifer convertibles stuff has always been the most comfortable and durable at that price point.

Re: Sectional Couch Help
We're similar to you in that we have small (messy) children and a pet who loves to sit on our furniture (even though we don't like it). We went with a leather sectional from Craigslist. I couldn't stomach spending $4k+ for a couch that was sure to be ruined within a year and I'd be paranoid about the dog scratching it, a kid peeing on it, DH spilling a drink on it, etc. We got a pair of Jennifer sectionals for less than $1k last year off CL. New to us and we are relaxed if something spills on it.
But if you do decide to buy a new one, I highly recommend getting the service plans. Our previous LR set was from LaZBoy and we paid for the Guardsman protection plan. It paid for itself in 2-3 visits and our sons knew the techs' names by heart and even referred to them as their best friends -- that's how often they came to clean our sofas!!!

Re: Sectional Couch Help
Hey Kerry...
We had a big leather sectional in the townhouse (from my parents house) that lasted for almost 15 years or so... Looked great and as super easy to clean...until we got whiskey... You obviously know hes big like chevy and his nails TORE IT UP!! You could tell the exact two seats he tended to sit in based on all the scratches on them. It really looked horrible within a year...
I get that your family isn't going to change, but could you possibly live with chevy not being allowed on the couches? Once we re-did our basement and bought new couches, whiskey was no longer allowed on them...it was super easy to train him and he was 5 when we bought them...
I did miss having him sit on my lap every now and then but it was also nice not having the 75lb lap dog on top of me!!
Good luck!
