enlarged kidney?
hey ladies. I am 24wks and for the last two sonos the doctors noticed an enlarged kidney on my baby boy. At my last appt (after the level 2), the doctor mentioned how I would have to come in once a month for sonos to check it. He wasn't overly concerned and said that the genetic tests came back fine but I can't help but worry.
Anyone know what this could be from or have you experienced this?
thanks

Re: enlarged kidney?
We had the same issue with DS. When they saw it at the anatomy scan, they sent us for a second level ultrasound at Stonybrook with a specialist. They all told us it was "probably" nothing to be worried about, but how can you not be, right? We pretty much ended up getting an ultrasound at almost every appointment until he was born, each time they got less concerned.
Apparently it is very common, especially in boys. The specialist we saw had told us based upon our previous genetic tests being totally fine, he was really not concerned, but if we were, we could go for an amino. We didnt. They told us if it was still looking enlarged at his last sono, they would probably want to check him when he was born, but by that point, they said it was all good.
Oh, and the specialist even told us that yes, they were a little larger than the average, but when you think of it, average is, well, just an average, so a little bigger is probably just the normal for some.
Try not to worry to much. And I looked at it as just a good reason to see DS more often.

Re: enlarged kidney?
This is very common in boys! DS had enlarged kidneys throughout my entire pregnancy. But as soon as he was born, he peed (all over the nurses!) and we never had to worry about it again.
In the vast majority of enlarged kidneys they resolve themselves during the pregnancy or very soon after birth. We told the ped about it while I was still pregnant and he assured us it would be nothing to worry about.

Re: enlarged kidney?
The same thing happened with my DD at our 20 week sono. I had to follow up with extra sonos w/ a high risk Dr. Her kidney measured large on every sono until birth, but none of the Drs were concerned since everything else looked good. After she was born, she had a sono and her kidneys were perfect.
They were also convinced she was 8+ lbs and she was only 7lbs, 1oz! So apparently their measurements were off in a few places!
I was so freaked out about it, but it wound up being absolutely nothing and from what I've heard, it's common.
Try not to worry and don't google.
