I could technically have her sit on my lap. But I'm wondering if it would be better to just suck it up and buy a seat.

Any experiences with just under or 2 year olds flying? Thanks!

I would get their own seat. I cant imagine lapping the whole flight. Its a PITA. I would also think of the person you'd have to sit next to. I just flew with ds last month, he chilled and watched cartoons the whole fight (minus the 4 trips to check out the bathroom).

I would get them their own seat unless they are extremely $$$$. Airlines are placing the seats closer together so it's very uncomfortable. The last time I flew with a lap infant was at 17 mos for DS 1 who was small for his age - it was MISERABLE!

Unless it is tons of money I would get a seat.

I flew with DS by myself when he was 15m and it was tough. THere isn't much room. I said I would never fly again with him as a lap child.

We are going to FL next month and he will be 20M and I didn't get a seat because DH is coming with us and I figured I would have more room...I am 2nd guessing that decision every day!!!!!

DS1 we flew with when he wad 22 months and didnt get a seat. the flight wound up not being full so he had the room but he woudl have been fine on our laps. He was a very content kid and spent half the flight on DH's lap looking out the window.

DS2 was days before his birthday when we flew. We didnt get him a seat and the flight was full. We managed fine, with toys and snacks, movies, etc on the way back we bought him a seat bc he turned2 on the trip. honestly he was harder on that flight.

both times was to orlando.

I say it depends on the kid. and the price.

Yes, if it seemed to be a crowded flight. I like my kids in their car seats on the plane for my own sanity.

Re: Would you get an almost 2 year old their own seat on a plane?

I depends.
When we flew with our two oldest we had the whole row so we did not buy DS a ticket, we just pulled up all the arm rests and we could all sit comfortably.

If it was just me and my youngest (almost two also), I would probably buy her a seat at this point because she would be squirming around a lot.

We have flown several time to Florida and never got DS a seat, we went in July and he was 21m. I figure might as well take advantage of it being free while you can Chat Icon if it were a long flight I might feel different.

I personally wouldn't spend the money - what we did was upgrade to first class so we had more room, and that was cheaper than buying 2 seats.

Depends on how long the flight is.

DS is 2 and we have to buy him a seat but he usually spends most of the flight on my lap or DH's lap anyways. The last flight we were on, there were empty seats all around us, DS had his own seat and our family of 4 still sat crammed in 3 seats. lol

Re: Would you get an almost 2 year old their own seat on a plane?

Last week, a good friend of mine had quite an experience flying with her very close to 2 yr old on her lap, from NY to CA. They boarded the plane and her son (on her lap) immediately kicked the seat in front of them. The guy turned around and was really nasty, asking her to "make" her son stop - she said she would do her best. Again, before the plane even left the gate, son kicked the seat and guy got nasty. My friend really didn't know what to do. She asked the flight attendant if there was anywhere they could move. (the guy in front of her wouldn't move because he was in an exit row). She said the flight attendant (who was very helpful to my friend, but overall kind of nasty and a "no nonsense" kind of guy), found her a window seat next to a couple who had the wife in the middle and husband on the aisle. As soon as the husband saw them coming, he started to complain to the flight attendant. Again, my friend apologized, but there wasn't much she could do. While my friend and her son were trying to settle into their seat, the husband of the couple apparently said something nasty (cursed at) to the flight attendant. The plane had started to taxi to the runway when the pilot announced they had to return to the gate because of a security issue - the flight attendant had called in about the husband who cursed at him - security came onto the plane and made him get off the flight!!! So the husband and wife left the plane - my friend felt TERRIBLE and was shocked about what had happened, but there wasn't anything she could do.

So, in the long run, I don't think getting a seat for your child would be such a bad idea Chat Icon

We are flying in October (DD will be 10 months) and we opted to get her an individual seat. We don't fly that often, and it's a 3 / 3 plane, so thought it would be nice to have the whole row to ourselves. I also don't feel like having her sit on my lap for 4 hours.

So, if you can spring the extra money, I would definitely do it.

I guess it would depend on your child but for us YES!!!!! We flew last week with 20 month DD and we got her a seat and brought her car seat on the plane. She is sooooo super active that I could have never imagined her sitting on our laps for the flight. It was easy to just put her in the car seat just like we were in the car.

Absolutely. There are many documented cases of lap kids getting injured on planes. I wouldn't risk DC getting hurt.

I totally would get a seat for my DD. I haven't flown with her yet, but she is very active, and even at 14 months, if I was flying with her, I would get her a seat and bring her car seat. There is no way she would stay on either of our laps for more than 2 minutes!

Unless its extremely expensive, yes I would. The last thing you want on a flight it a kid that's cramped in a seat with you. I think it's worth it for them to have their own seat; especially if it's a long flight.
