I've only been to black tie weddings on Saturday nights. I get what you're saying and I do think it's a little weird.
I agree that usually the bigger, formal weddings are normally on Saturday night but a black tie on Friday or Sunday wouldn't annoy me.

I think black tie weddings are annoying, period.
I do think its kind of even more BS on a Sunday. Its like - well we cant afford a Saturday night but hey we're gonna make you shell out for tuxes and what not.

ditto
I always dress fancy for a wedding . My DH always wears a nice dark suit and tie. He does not own a tux and no way in hell I would rent one I think it is obnoxious to expect it.

I will be honest - this was exactly my thought too but I didn't want to say it b/c i was afraid i would cause an argument

Re: Weird or just me?
I don't think black tie means you need to rent a tux anymore.
At the one I went to, most of the guys, unless they were part of the wedding party/family, just wore dark suits and a "black tie".
A couple people who already owned tuxes wore them.

We have been invited to a black tie wedding. In and of itself, that's fine. But it's a Sunday evening. I feel like you should only ask for black tie on a Saturday night. Would you be annoyed to have to attend a black tie wedding on a Sunday? And just to be clear, the wedding is at a nice place, but we've attended two other weddings there on Saturday nights- neither of which were black tie.
I'm not clear on what exactly you are annoyed at? That you and your DH have to get a little more dressed up on a Sunday vs a Sat??

If you look a couple posts up, that kind of sums up the annoyance. They don't have the added expense of a Saturday night wedding (which in my opinion is the only time it's even appropriate to ask for black tie) but we have the added expense of dressing appropriately. My DH does not like rentals and is now planning on buying a tux. Yes, I find that annoying.

But why even bother with the tux?
JMO, but I don't think that's needed.
Just a nice dark suit.
Any other ladies want to chime in?

A nice dark suit is absolutely fine.
We've gone to the Tony Awards - a black tie event - and DH wears a dark suit instead of a tux. He doesn't own one, and he's on the shorter side so tuxedos almost make him look shorter for some reason. When we go to the Tonys, its due to the generosity of the company I work for, and no one has ever told us that he (or any of the other guys who choose a dark suit over a tux) is not dressed appropriately. And they are not shy about letting us know things like that.
He has worn it to a black tie wedding as well. There were other guys who did the same. Everyone looked great.
