What do you count as the actual first day of AF?

What do you count as the actual first day of AF?
I usually have super light spotting (a little brown or red when I wipe) at the very start of AF. It will be like that for usually a while day before the actual flow starts. Would you count the first day of spotting as Day 1?

Day 1 is your first full flow day

I was going for testing that needed to be done exactly 3 days after AF started and another 6-10 days after. When I was scheduling the appts the RE said to count the day AF starts as day 1 if you start to bleed before 3PM. Mine started around 4 so day 1 was the following day.

What do you count as the actual first day of AF?
My OB says first full flow day, but if that comes after 5 pm, that is day0 and the next is day 1.
