If you nurse your LO to sleep, what happens when you go back to work?

So I'm starting to learn that the only way to get DS (3months) to sleep is to nurse him to sleep and then let him sleep on my shoulder for 10 minutes before putting him down. DH has similar luck with a pumped bottle at bedtime.

But I'm going back to work in September and have no idea how the nanny will go about putting DS down for naps. He doesn't take a pacifier.. will feedings have to be timed with naptime? Will I have to give extra bottles just to "knock him out"?

Any advice from BTDT moms?

I still nurse DS (21 months) to sleep when home, but he has no problems allowing the babysitter to rub his back and let him fall asleep. If I had rubbed his back to fall asleep even at 6 months, he would have laughed at me, He took bottles and pacifiers from her (until 8 months when he dropped both) too. When we aren't around, they adapt and do so well. Try not to worry:)

Will he take a pacifier? It might be the sucking that soothes him to sleep...

I'm glad to see i'm not the only one who's 21 month old still needs to be nursed to sleep! I'm hoping to try and break that habit because he goes down for everyone else with no problem! when he was an infant my in-laws put DS in the swing to help him go to sleep and daycare used to rock him a bit in the crib (it had wheels) or rub his back.

dd was like that early on - and i would trick her into taking the pacifier. when i would notice she was just using me to put herself to sleep (bc she normally would start out hungry and eating)...i would swap out my boob and put in a pacifier but i wouldnt move her or anything. after she was sleeping in my arms with the pacifier i would move her. eventually she just began to take the pacifier

You still have a few weeks before you go back to work and a lot can change, especially when they are so young. At 3 or 4 months old, DS only napped in his swing. Now he's almost 6 months old and now naps in his crib because he likes rolling around and sleeping on his tummy.

I say, do whatever works. Try a bunch of things. And nannies are good. She'll figure it out!

To the OP-- when I went back to work, DS was 14 wks old. He was on no schedule during the day, he just napped whenever he was tired- always after nursing. When he went to daycare, at first he refused bottles, but after a few wks, they had him on a good schedule and he was taking the bottle no problem. Now he is a champion napper at daycare. I think it is all about routine for most babies. GL! I am sure your baby will do great with the nanny. :)

DS is 7 months and I still nurse him to sleep and I work full time. He naps at daycare w/out any problems.
