We are heading to Maine his summer as well.
The southern Coast area is probably whaat you want - Wells, Ogunquit, Kennybunk
We are going a little bit more north to Rockport. I like more of a resort. We are staying at Samoset
We also looked at the Beachmere Inn in Ogunquit, but they didn't have the room type we wanted for the week we are going.

There are amazing restaurants in Kennebunkport and in Portland. You could stay in Old Orchard Beach (very kitchy) and venture out to Kennebunkport or Portland for dinner. Freeport has great places to eat, as does Boothbay. Once you decide on a location, Im happy to make specific recommendations for you.
