Potty Training-I'd like to hear your views from BTDT
DS turned 2 in May. He was showing signs of being ready so we are trying the 3 day potty training method.
So far, he's done #2, but #1 is another story. He seems to resist going #1 on the toilet. At the same time, if he has an accident, he asks for a towel to clean it up himself. But we are positive and persistent.
Anyway, we co-sleep at night. We lay down the waterproof mats, towels, put the vinyl/plastic underpants on over his underpants, but it's still a mess.
The 3 day ebook says NO DIAPERS! But I want to know...did you do diapers at night? DH is adamant because he thinks it will be a regression. I am ready to put diapers OVER the underpants so he gets the wet feeling without soaking the bed. I don't have the easiest laundry access.
So what did you do at night?

Potty Training-I'd like to hear your views from BTDT
When I started using 3DayPT, I stopped diapers completely. The only diaper DS wears is for swimming because it's a rule at the pool. And I call them swim underwear now. Following the 3Day method, DS has only woken up wet 4 times since we started in February: 1 of which was our fault because we didn't hear him calling out to us and another because he was sick.

I didn't do the 3 day program but I can say I kept my DD in pull ups at night for a long time (for my own selfish reasons of not wanting to have to change sheets in the middle of the night ) and we never had any regression issues. After a few months of waking up dry, I finally stopped using them.

Re: Potty Training-I'd like to hear your views from BTDT
I read the 3 day program and modified it a bit to our own lifestyle. We gave up diapers during the day, but still used pull ups for naps and bedtime. DD was fully day trained in less than a week but still wears a pull up to sleep and I am fine with that. It is SATURATED when she wakes up so I know she still doesn't have that control yet and I'd rather not upset her with wet beds every night.

Re: Potty Training-I'd like to hear your views from BTDT
i followed it to a tee for a month or 2 no diapers at all. After her waking up constantly several times at night soaked like she drank 10 gallons of water before bed when she barely drinks that much during the day to begin with i finally gave in and put pullup on her at night only and it has been fine. I have to make a real effort again for night wehre i really do limit drinks 2 hours before bed any slight of noise go in and take her to the potty and i am hoping for her to wake up dry on her own as a sigh i should start underwear at night again

Re: Potty Training-I'd like to hear your views from BTDT
For both my DD and DS we let them wear pull-ups at night.
Both were fully day trained within 3-5 days.
DS was potty trained at a bit shy of 2.5 years, but did not stay dry overnight until almost 5 years old. His body was just not ready.
DD was day trained at 2 years old, and night trained 2 months later (although she was probably ready earlier). I was nervous bc of how long it took us to night train DS.
My ped said night training is completely different and if your body is not ready, it is just not ready.

We followed the 3 day potty training exactly - no diapers at all. I think I did this more for myself than him. I didn't want to feel I had them to go back on. We did it exactly - gave all diapers away, kept one for him to toss. He aced it - both night & day. This coming from a kid who used to pee through an overnight diaper AND a diaper doubler...was dry.

We used the 3 day method when DS was 26 months old. He wore pull-ups at night for about 6 months. He stopped wearing them after he woke up dry 3/4 nights in a row. He's had maybe 3 accidents since. He's in a bed now, so if he has to go he can just go.

Re: Potty Training-I'd like to hear your views from BTDT
We did the 3 day potty training a month ago when DS was 27 months old. The morning we started the 3 days DS woke up with his usual soaked diaper. In the ebook it says to wake them 1 hour after falling asleep and one 1 before waking up to train them to wake to pee.
That first night I woke him 1 hour after falling asleep. He flipped out. Screamed for half an hour. He did squeeze out some pee but it wasn't worth waking him for it. So I let him sleep through until he naturally woke up. He was completely dry in the morning! After that I never woke him again. He never has peed in his bed. I thought for sure he would wet the bed. I even had clean sheets waiting for easy middle of the night changes.
I had DS throw away his own diapers. Even though the first few days he had many accidents he never had one at nap time or bedtime.

One of my sons trained for #1 and #2 almost instantly, though I had him in a pull up at night for a couple of weeks, he wasn't waking up wet.
My other son was good with #1 for the most part, but was in pull ups for almost a year at night because he could not wake up dry. He was also scared to poop on the potty. Finally we went cold turkey, he got constipated a couple of times, but finally got it. He is now fully trained, although he may have an overnight wetting incident once every 2 months or so.

We are on Day #3 of the 3 day method. It's been working great. One thing I will say is my DS did NOT want to go on the big toilet. I tried with a potty topper first but he kept saying he was scared. We got him a potty and he's nailing it every time. I'm not sure if you're using a potty or not but here's the one I got that I'd recommend for boys. We had the Baby Bjorn first and it sprayed everywhere.

We did the 3 day method also but modified it to suit our needs and used pull ups for naps and nighttime. After he was day trained for about 2 weeks, I noticed he was waking up from naps dry so I stopped using pull ups for naps. A few weeks later, he was also waking up dry in the mornings. I know you're not supposed to use pull ups with the 3 day program but there was no way I was waking up DS in the middle of the night to pee and taking a chance he'd stay up all night lol

Re: Potty Training-I'd like to hear your views from BTDT
pull ups at night, definitely!!!
You have to remember that the muscles used to control the bladder are just getting used now...it's hard to switch that over to nighttime right away for a kid that hasn't has to use those muscles for 2 years.
Being potty trained during the day was enough for me in the beginning...pull ups at night, and you'd be surprised..in a short time you'll start seeing the pull ups become drier and drier until you can start eliminating them.

I didn't do the three day method. But, I gave diapers at night. After he trained for a week he started staying dry at night. Then I took the diapers away with no problem.
My best advice is that if it is difficult.. put it aside for now.
Liam was ready when he was ready. I kept trying to push it on him and when he was ready it was very easy.. number 1 that is.. number 2... That was awful. enemas and everything.

Re: Potty Training-I'd like to hear your views from BTDT
My DD was trained at 3y 3m old and we went cold turkey with the diapers during the day, she was completely trained in 3 days. However, at night we kept her in Pull-Ups...........for months, She woke up dry 95% of the time but we kept her in the Pull-Ups anyway for a while.
She never had accidents during the day and never regressed either. Using Pull-Ups at night had zero effect on her potty training.
Maybe your DS is not quite ready right now. Also, everything I read said being able to "hold it" at night is not something you teach, it's something that takes time because it is a developmental thing. I would just put the Pull-Ups on at night while you continue to train him.

Re: Potty Training-I'd like to hear your views from BTDT
We used the 3 day potty and I am going crazy b/c at this point we still have to wake DS up during the night multiple times to pee. If not, he will have an accident. We have not given in and used Pull Ups. We do not cosleep but DS is in a full sized bed. We ordered a waterproof mattress pad and line an additional old crib pad by where his butt lands. This way we don't have to wash the pad just the fitted sheet and the crib pad. I have even considered going to the hospital supply store to buy those bed pads.

we did the 3 day potty training - no bottoms - there are 2 different 3 days I found - but we modified it because my son would wake up drenched from nap or night time - he was just too sound a sleeper
he was just over 2 when he trained - he got the pee thing in less than 3 days and poop he had been using the potty for a while so that was no big deal
we had to use pullups at night because it helped with the laundry - but when he was ready to give the pullup he has stayed dry most nights - that was at 3.5 -
we had some regression with him pooping in his pullup at the end of nap time but a little reward got rid of that - it was just lazy he had no fear of the potty

Just another person saying to treat days and night differently. There is no rush to take off the pull up during sleep -- all that does is cause both of you stress.

Thanks for the input. We are definitely going the route of treating days/nights differently. We understand that his little body is going to take a while to get the night time training down. I am just one of those "but the books says," people and I am learning to take what works and leave what doesn't. No diapers at night...NOT working.
