Anyone Familiar With Southern California
We decided to take a week long trip there next month but have no idea where to stay. We have a teen and a toddler. I've narrowed down some attractions but am open to suggestions.
Hollywood blvd Hollywood sign Universal studios Disneyland Venice beach Santa Monica pier Pacific Coast Highway to Malibu Rodeo drive The magic castle
San diego zoo if we have time
Should I stay a few days in Santa Monica and a few in hollywood? rent a home or hotel?
I've never left the east coast so any suggestions would be great Thanks!

You will enjoy all the above that you mentioned. Pac Coast Hwy is gorgeous & you go eat in Malibu & watch the sunset. Lots to do in Downtown LA like shopping, museums, Chinese theater, to name a few. Also, take a ride to Long Beach take a tour of the queen Mary ship. Santa Monica.pier is also fun.
As for Hotels, LA is prime location so ask about parking fees. They can be as much as $40 per day.

Cabrillo National monument...check out the tide schedule and go check out the tidepools!!! Coronado is nice too Seal beach
My brother lives in San Diego so I've always stayed with him, except when he got married then we stayed at the Marriott in I believe La Jolla (very clean hotel!) Honestly, there is sooo much to do there that a week is not enough time, so prioritize what you really want to do. Enjoy your trip!!

Re: Anyone Familiar With Southern California
I did a Southern California trip (focused on Disneyland of course) a few months ago and I can tell you that you're trying to do a LOT for a week.
I think if you stay concentrated in LA, you'd be good. The drive to San Diego is a beautiful drive but takes a few hours.
We found the traffic in and around LA to be just as bad as they say, so we didn't get to do half of what was on our list for the LA portion. I suggest prioritizing. If you get to do it all, that's great, but pick the "must do" attractions.
We did 3 days at Disneyland. You don't have to, but note that the "classic" attractions are at Disneyland Park and Cars Land is at Disney's California Adventure so most people will want to do both parks.
We stayed at several hotels while in California (5 in all). We really liked the Ayres hotel. There are a few of them in different areas. We stayed in Manhattan Beach. it's pretty adult, but we had a lot of space and free breakfast and FREE PARKING which is HUGE in California. Expect to pay for parking almost everywhere you go.
Overall, our trip was 10 days and we did San Diego, Disneyland and LA (from a home base in Manhattan Beach).
We enjoyed San Diego a lot and there is so much to do there without traveling far and battling traffic. We got to go to the zoo, go whale watching, shopping, great food and see awesome sunsets all within a 15 min drive, which we loved.
While at Disneyland, we stayed onsite, which means we walked to the parks in the morning and got to take advantage of Early Entry each day.
In LA we stayed in Manhattan Beach which was great in terms of relaxation but did make it harder to see things in LA.
Are you interested in Universal Studios based on the studio tour aspect, or based on the rides?

Re: Anyone Familiar With Southern California
I posted my review on the travel board of our southern California trip last week. I would look into getting a Southern California City Pass for each of you to save some money on your trip.
FM me with any questions.

Re: Anyone Familiar With Southern California
Jennifer you are right, we decided to nix San Diego all together. We will focus on LA this trip. We're interested in both aspects of Universal Studios. It seems that Universal is more for older kids so I'm not sure if my 3 y/o would enjoy it but I know my 16 y/o will.
