Endometriosis dr&surgery ?

I am newly unoffically diag. with endo. My obgyn said its most likely i do have it but the only way to find out for sure is to have to surgery. I have been ttc for 2 yrs now and have to worst pain during my period among other symptoms. I think im ready to look into drs who perform the removal of the endo. Any ladies who have had this surgery with success and are happy with the surgons they used can you please share any info.

Re: Endometriosis dr&surgery ?

Dr. Kligman in cornell!!! I have said it on other posts but I had stage IV endo and extreme scarring and adhesions everywhere. He basically saved my reproductive organs and I was able to get pregnant naturally a year later. He is such a skilled surgeon with endo and he even was able to save one of my tubes and clear it completely. I may be going back to him for another lap to see if I have more adhesions bc it's taking me a while to get preg again now that we are trying again. Good luck!

edited to add, he does his surgeries in Ny Prebyterian which is an amazing hospital. The best in my opinion.

I had symptoms my whole teenage years and early 20s.. horrible pain during my period- like taking 1000mg of advil every 6 hours type bad. I had a pulling pain on the RT side, just overall feeling terrible during my periods. My GYN kept medicating me, giving me BCPs and painkillers bc he kept saying I was too young for surgery and the only way to diagnose endo is by a laporoscopy. I dealt with it for years. Then I went to a gastro Dr bc I was having issues with going #2 and he said everything looked normal but he also suspected endo so referred me to Kligman. I had a consult with him and within those 2 hours, he said I needed an emergency lap asap. He immediately submited to the insurance. I was TERRIFIED!! I never had a Dr say that to me and I was so used to my GYN who said it was no big deal. I was sick of dealing with the pain so I scheduled the surgery for the following week. It was an out patient procedure- only took about 2 hours and they go into your belly button and through two tiny incisions on your lower belly. Very non-invasive. When I got out of surgery, he told me my prognosis-- I had stage IV endo with uterine scarring, endo on my ovaries and in my tubes, adhesions on my intestines- I was a mess. Basically, if I waited, i would have lost my ovaries and uterus at 21. His quick thinking and skills with removing everything saved my future! I get emotional thinking about it. He did tell me that the damage was severe and that if I wanted to get preg in the future, I might need IVF bc the scarring in my tubes was horrible. Turns out, I got naturally pregnant with a healthy beautiful baby boy a year later. Since the surgery- 8 years ago- I have had a completely normal life. I have had normal periods, very slight cramps during AF time, and my RT tube is healthy and clear. The surgery gave me my life back. I tell my story a lot to educate women about being their own advocate with health! Always trust your gut when you feel things are not right and you are not feeling well. Endo is a very damaging disease. I have a collapsed LT tube from it and it damaged one of my ovaries so bad that my hormones are off. It is something I have to deal with for life but my Drs believe I will get pregnant eventually.
If endo is suspected, I would def recommend you go for a lap and not wait too long. It may not be endo- could be adhesions which happen with pelvic inflammatory disease or polyps or fibroids. Basically the lap can rule out any situation and it is a very easy procedure. My RE now said I have a perfect uterus and that he was a very skilled surgeon for my organs to look the way they do from Stage IV endo.. Let me know if there's any more info that you need!

Hi. I'm sorry to hear that you're going through this. I've had surgery for Stage IV endo twice. The first time was in Nov. 2001 at LIJ. The second time I went to the Center for Endometriosis Care in Atlanta. I won't lie; it was expensive, but it was totally worth it. Dr. Sinervo is a God send.

Best of luck!

Thanks again lillies for sharing your story it really makes me think i should get a look at sooner than later and im happy to hear you got pregant naturally with your son. MrsM did you not have a good experience at lij the first time. And was it not covered under insurance. I never even took that into account.

If you are having clinical symptoms like pain, your Dr. can get it approved by the insurance. I think I paid just my copay. The office managers usually get that figured out.

I wish I had known more before I had the surgery at LIJ. That was covered by insurance, but the doctor used ablation, where they try to burn away or cauterize the endo. This is not as effective as cutting away the endo. Also, the doctor was "just" an ob/gyn; he did not specialize in endo. He wound up removing 3/4 of 1 ovary and 1/4 of the other.

Hindsight being 20/20, I should have gone to a more specialized doctor, who was more knowledgeable about endo and had a higher success rate for removing all of the endo. A more specialized doctor may also have been able to save more of my ovaries.

On a less technical level, I felt like I was just another body to the first doctor and staff at LIJ. In Atlanta, they doctors, nurses and staff were so attentive. The doctor even gave me his personal email address and cell phone number, so I could reach him any time with questions or concerns.

The downside was that it was out of network on my insurance, so I had a greater out of pocket expense than with the first surgery.

Re: Endometriosis dr&surgery ?

I have a similar story to the previous poster. I starting seeing a RE because I was was having trouble ttc and he decided to do a laparoscopy to have a better look. He found moderate endo and was told he removed it. But 2 years later I started having bad cramps again so I did some research and found Dr. Farr Nezhat. He is a surgeon and specializes in endo and gynecological oncology. He has 2 offices, one in the city and the other is in lynbrook. The li office he works out of is called woman's contemporary care. The surgery was done at Winthrop. I don't remember which hospital in the city he was affiliated with. He was awesome. He removed it all and have had no pain. He cut it all out instead of burning it off. He doesn't take insurance either, you have to have out of network coverage. I highly recommend him.
