So I literally just found out that DH's very best friends sister had her baby this morning and named him the same name we were planning to use. I know it's totally crazy to be upset about it but my heart sank when I heard. Of course I'm so happy for them and very thankful everything went well (she was having complications) but I feel sad. DH and I have spent a lot of time thinking of a name we both loved and we may still use it but it doesn't feel as special anymore. Keep in mind it is not a commonly used name which is another reason we were excited about it. DH is a little bummed too. I mean we don't see them very often but his friend is like an uncle to our daughter so it almost feels like he'll have two nephews now with the same name We aren't 100% now that we want to use it anymore and I just feel so sad now. We have 7 weeks left too. Just needed to vent I can't tell if I'm rightfully disappointed or its my crazy pregnancy hormones at work.

If it is his friends sister i would def use the name! Sorry this happened, but I wouldnt switch it if i was you.

I say just use it, it's still a special name for you and DH! Who cares if he has 2 nephews with the same name!! In many families people use the same name over and over again because it's a family name - like in my family Peter and Gary are names that used over and over again...

I don't think that's a close enough connection to automatically rule out using the name.

It definitely sucks. But you still have 7 weeks to mull it over, and this other baby is not actually part of your family, so I definitely think you should still use it if you love it that much.

I'd definitely use it! Like the girls said she is not a close enough relation/friendship to worry about it- if it was the BF that used that name, I'd feel different though

either way, I am sorry that you are disapointed, I know how hard it is to agree on a name!

I would still use it...unfortunately there's always the chance of running into someone with the same name, so don't sweat it. If it's meaningful to you and DH that's all that matters!

Will this person have 2 "newphews" with the same name.. sure. But how does that effect you guys?

Remember, not to make you more upset or anything, but all of these unique, and uncommon names aren't going to remain that way over the next 5 years.

Definitely still use and don't worry about it. When we picked my DS's name it meant that my sister would have two nephews with the same name, but oh well for her!

My mom also has 2 nieces with the same name. I think it happens a lot. Keep the name if you love it!

Your friends won't care ... you shouldn't either!!

If you love a name -- use it.

If I love a name I am using it. I don't care if it's my nephew, sister, aunt, BFF. A name is a name forever and I will never turn down a name I love because someone else used it. If they care, then I think it's their issue not yours.

Two teachers named their daughters the same name about a month apart ... They didn't seem to care ... They have play dates and all

I'd still use it. It's not your BF or even DH's and not someone in your family. My close friend's sister named her daughter the same name as mine a month after my DD was born, but it didn't bother me in the least.

Thanks for all the responses. It's really not so much anyone being upset if we use it. I don't think anyone will care. It just stung when I heard it at first because we thought we picked a special and very different name. It's actually pretty ironic that they chose it too. We may still use it, we have a 2nd name we like but its more traditional then we want, we'll see as it gets closer. I don't feel as upset about it anymore.

I think you should still use it. It's not like it's your DH's sister or your sister. It's his friend's sister... it's far enough removed that you shouldn't worry about it.
