Los Angeles vacation

Is it a better idea to stay just outside LA in Anaheim, Santa Monica etc..? It seems like so many downtown LA hotels charge for parking, up to $30 a day. Ouchh.

Also, how much sightseeing can be done in one day? I'm going to look into the Go LA card which gives access to many attractions for one price. Do tour/sightseeing buses have hotel pickups?

I have been there but its been a long time & I'm sure a lot has changed. I'm open to thoughts & suggestions.

its a museum. art as well as modern architecture. if that's not your thing, you will still enjoy it because the grounds are extremely beautiful and the views you get the city are absolutely incredible. parking is about 15$ but there are no other fees( unless you want lunch) you can also visit the Getty Villa in Malibu.

Sounds lovely. Also, where did you eat downtown? I heard of LA Live having places to eat.

http://www.parksbbq.com/parks in Koreatown. the BEST kalbi

http://animalrestaurant.com/ (major disappointment!) I had pig ears, beef heart, rabbit legs, veal brain and poutine and was STILL STARVING! i ended up going to EL CHATO taco truck. its a MUST. off the side of the road, it is open late night only

and as i mentioned before, Huckleberry cafe. i would fly back JUST to eat there. (duck hash, croque monsieur, and the most delicious corn muffin with bacon and rosemary)

and on the way back to LAX, go to in and out burger lol

Los Angeles vacation

I would stay closer to where you are planning to be most often. If you are going to be in the downtown area mostly, I would not stay in Santa Monica. There are several towns not too far way from downtown tat should be cheaper - like the Hollywood areas and Pasadena area. I didn't stay there often, but the few times I did I stayed at the Grafton in Hollywood - right next to House of Blues.

I agree that you have to see the Getty. If you are into gardens and art, the Huntington in San Marino (near Pasadena) is another must see. I like Disney so I love Disneyland ;)

Personally I wouldn't stay downtown. I love the Santa Monica area or even west Hollywood. Everywhere in la you need a car. My fave things to do are go to Santa Monica, drive up pch, walk along Venice beach, drive through mil holland, griffith lark observatory.

I go to la about 4-5 times per year so let me know if you have specific questions

how long are you going to be in LA and what do you plan on doing? i've stayed both in and outside of LA before, but its always depended my travel plans.

last time i went, i did not rent a car, and we stayed in town at the renaissance hotel and spa at the highland and hollywood center. its a great central location. walking distance to chinese theater, walk of fame, and a few other attractions. we also took the city bus (yup, it was cheap and got the job done) to a bunch of other tourist stuff (farmer's market, the pits, etc).

we also decided to go to universal studios for the day, we got tickets that came with a free bus ride. so we never needed a car and had a lot of fun.

looks like renaissance closed and its now a lowes. either way, the location is perfect for downtown touristy stuff.

You have Fm. We plan on going for a week or so. Does the city bus pick you up at the hotel?

Depending on where you want to go, you may need to walk a few blocks to the right bus stop - or even transfer. But there was no issue taking the city bus.

We usually like to take public transportation when traveling to get a better sense of the cultur, so taking a city bus and looking at bus maps was no big deal for us.

Take a look at the map, and see if that fits your needs.

Also, if you want to venture nout, consider renting a car for just a day or two. Maybe zip car? Price compare car rates online and see what makes the most sense.

Do you havea list of places you want to go?
