When I was researching Charlotte I looked into Fort Mill as well, supposed to have great schools and because its in SC supposedly the taxes are cheaper. I would def move but DH won't budge.

This is what she had told me. Friend is a teacher in Weddington.

FT Mill schools are pretty good. I know people that live just on the divide between Ft Mill and NC and they wish they were on the Fort Mill, SC side because of the schools.

I could never leave New York. Inexpensive housing is a lure but I'd be bored out of my mind in 4000 square feet without a major metropolitan city like NYC. Just my preference.

Saw this posted on another board, and although its a comparison with Raleigh, NC and not Charlotte- it does a good job of explaining the disparity:

Just a quick comparison of COL issues between Long Island and Raleigh, NC.

Raleigh, NC East Meadow, NY
Average House Cost(2009) 214,000 432,440
Average Taxes(2009) 1,848 8,049
Average Salary for Teacher 51,000 72,000
Average Salary for Engineer 81,000 73,000

Taxes in East Meadow appear to be roughly twice the assessed rate of those in Raleigh. Housing costs are less than half. Teachers on Long Island make approximately 40% more money than in Raleigh yet the cost of living is 100% greater. Engineers make approximately 10% less on LI compared to Raleigh yet the cost of living on LI is 100% greater.

Ultimately, if I am a teacher or an engineer, it makes more sense to move to Raleigh where my pay will be higher in the private sector and lower in the public sector, but my cost of living more than makes up the difference. What this tells me is the average person who lives and works on LI is at a competitive disadvantage compared to those who work elsewhere, hence depressed salaries. You would normally assume this would cause housing values to fall, ala Buffalo, NY. But since housing is high, demand must be high (or artificially constrained).

Therefore, people who are buying this property must be making their money elsewhere. Elsewhere in this case is NYC. So the real problem is that people who live and work on the Island are being priced out by people who can. The lack of any industrial or commercial base causes taxes to go sky high and many people are finding themselves unable to afford the area. The root cause isn't the police or teachers union, its poor economic development and diversity and surging demand from the rich folks who work in NYC.

The issue with being a teacher is there is no union in NC and the benefits are not as good as ny. And the salary increases are not as high. DH is a NYC teacher and we looked into moving- it was not worth it benefits wise.

It doesn't bother me at all. And we are owners. There isn't enough money in the world we could potentially save that would make us happy to live away from NYC.

I could live in those areas and live like a queen but it would tear me up inside to be so far away from NY. We wouldn't be happy in those kinds of places.

This is really what it comes down to. I live just outside Raleigh Durham. One of the best job markets in the country. My husband and i both make "NY" type salaries. If you can stand the Southern culture, its a great move. i still miss NY though

I feel the same way but about LI Chat Icon We have friends in NC and friends in the outter Philly burbs they paid significantly less than what we paid for double the property and another 100k sq ft... but then I think... well what would DH and I make as salaries? Both of us would take huge hits in that area. What companies are there to work for we both work for great companies with amazing benefits and perks. How are the schools in these areas and what is available for the kids? What is available in the way of entertainment? I like living 45 minutes from the city to amazing restaurants, museums, Broadway... and just a drive from the wineries and maybe 15 minutes from beaches... these are things we do a lot. For me, I know I couldn't be 100% happy any place else.

UNBELIEVABLE - I need to move to Charlotte, $$$

TONS of money in Charlotte. A hub for financial industry.
Schools are really good. Lots of programs. Teacher pay is not good, but schools are.
But even then, private schools are big in Charlotte as are charter schools.
Charlotte really is a great place to live. They have everything, just smaller scale and more affordable.
All sporting events...they do get broadway plays on tour...except tickets are 1/3 of the price
I entertained my kids daily there going to different places for years. Rally a ton to do.
NY is fine if that is what you want...but Charlotte is a really great lifestyle.
