8 week blood work? UPDATE

What do they usually test for at 8 weeks? It was the first round of blood work I had done and I asked the nurse what they test for, but she told me "just regular gynecological blood work". It was 11 viles!

Just got through to my dr's office and of course the doctor who called me is on vacation now until next week and can't be reached. They said she didn't leave a note about what it was in reference to. I said I had blood work done 3 weeks ago and the girl said its probably about that. She's going to have the on call dr call me. Not sure how that will get me an answer if the dr who called didn't leave any indication as to why she called. Chat Icon

"Everything" was the answer I got when they took 18 tubes from me. All your vitamin/hormone levels, RH something or other, certain genetic traits...etc.

Re: 8 week blood work?

i just had my first round of bloodwork and they took a ton of viles also! i don't know everything they test for, but i know some genetic carrier testing was done. for cystic fibrosis, spinal muscular atrophy, fragile X syndrome and taysachs (if you have irish or jewish in your background). if you come up as a carrier for these, they would want to test DH to see if he is also a carrier

I'm trying to pinpoint if something could have been off. I'm so annoyed and antsy I have to wait until tomorrow to find out why I got a call. My blood work was done 3 weeks ago. I'm assuming I would have heard earlier if it was anything bad.

Do you have your NT scan booked? Did you recently have a cardiac work up that maybe they got a copy of the results from and just wanted to let you know?

Was it the doctor who called our nurse/front desk?

8 week blood work?

I was under the impression that it was illegal to do ANY genetic testing without your explicit approval - mainly because that information can be shared with your insurance which can (a) affect your coverage and (b) affect employ-ability... I'm going to have to check on that when I get into work tomorrow (I'm a practice manager for a neurology office)...

Maybe it's different when they're testing for carrier status... but I would imagine if they were testing for carrier, they'd see if you were more than a carrier and actually had it... hmmmm the health care law nerd in me is definitely coming out!

My NT is scheduled for Tuesday, but the hgh risk obgyn is doing it. It was my regular obgyn who called me. It's been uneventful since my May 1 appointment with her, which is why I am confused by her call. I am scheduled to see her next Wednesday. She called me herself, not a nurse or office staff.

Re: 8 week blood work?

It could be something as simple as a vitamin deficiency .. I wouldn't get worked up over anything just yet, as long as your sonograms have been good.

Yeah, so far- had a 7 week with high risk obgyn and baby's hb was at 117 abdominally. 8 weeks with regular obgyn and she said everything was great. I will be calling at 9am on the dot lol

I'm A+. I'm sure it will be fine. I feel like blood test results are usually back within a week. (But I could be wrong)

Re: 8 week blood work?

Just spoke to my friend who goes to the same practice and is pregnant with #3. She said whenever something came back with her blood work, she heard from the office right away. So, makes me feel a little better about that since my blood work was 3 weeks ago.

Thanks for listening girls! I will feel better when I get through tomorrow!

This is what I was going to say. I remember the doctor calling me and I was in a panic. Turns out I was RH negative and had NO IDEA!!! My mom always told me I was A+ but turns out I'm AB-. The call DEF freaked me out but it really was nothing. And it was the day after I got my blood work done...3 weeks, she might just want to make sure your NT Scan is scheduled since she isn't doing it.

Re: 8 week blood work?

They usually do a lot of basic blood work, genetic testing (of anything you may carry), and HIV testing. My office has you sign something for the genetic and HIV testing.
