Spinoff to not having CAC:
This is very popular in Puerto Rico. My inlaws have it and it's awesome. Feels just like CAC.

We have CAC for most of our home, but the top floor needs an extra boost so we are having this mini-split system installed.
Our quote was $2900 for the unit + install. The install is a bit more than we expected because it's the third floor and we require additional copper pipe to travel from the main unit outside up the side of the house and into the area to be cooled.
After it's installed, I can give you more info because our guy is coming highly recommended from a friend.
Can't recommend the guy who did ours. He re-scheduled twice and then showed up 1hr late for the appointment to install. He and his team were here -- until after midnight! That's crazy to me!

Can you tell me quotes when you get them please. Dh just bought up having ac installed whether it be ductless or central. We have a small ranch too.
I was lucky enough to form a friendly relationship with the AC guy who is always working in my office building. I asked him about this and he loves the ductless system. He told me, the best thing to do is buy the unit from a site like amazon...

Just did a basic search, for example. He said the best are Mitsubishi, Pioneer, and Samsung. His number one favorite is Mitsubishi. Then, for us, I'm going to have FIL and my Dad install it - FIL is a carpenter, my Dad has installed everything from IG sprinkler systems to built new decks, etc. So, that is how we are saving money.
Because companies will up-charge you to order the units, up-charge you on the install, etc. So, that is how it gets to be a lot of money.
The other thing we are going to do is wait til next year just because I'm being cheap -- we just closed, aren't moving in until the end of the month, and then it's just July and August - if I can survive those two+ months then this expense doesn't need to be incurred until next May-ish. So, I am going to TRY and stick it out.
PS - I have a ranch, 1100 square feet, so he said two units starting at 18,000 BTU's should work perfect... one in our bedroom will cover the bedroom and bathroom end of the home -- the other in the den will cover den, hall, kitchen and that's it. Obviously, this will differ depending on the person, home, size of home, etc.

That is how my BF did it. He ordered it online and then a friend did the install. He also has Mitsubishi. Currently we have one unit and cools the entire main floor. We are having a second unit added to the master bedroom (just waiting for our friend to be available since he has been crazy busy since Sandy). For now the ceiling fan in the bedroom with the door open is more then keeping us cool (I just want to be able to shut the bedroom door at night).
