Disney... in the summer - the good, the bad?

I know the summer months are NOT the first pick for Disney.. But right now it is all that works for us.

Does anyone have a preference of when in summer to go?

Please tell me people have done it and survived Chat Icon
We were orginally planned for February break but my dad is really sick and its been taking a toll on us finacially so it looks like we will have to push back to next summer. I couldnt believe the plane ticket prices for that week! that alone sealed the deal that we couldnt do it Chat Icon

My kids will be 2 1/2 and 4 1/2 so I already expecting afternoon breaks and early nights.

TIA

Re: Disney... in the summer - the good, the bad?

We do it almost every year in the summer and have survived. We're going this July and have gone in August too. Most people who go in the summer prefer going the last 2 weeks of August since most schools are back in session. It's still hot but the crowds are a little lighter. Most of the parks have indoor attractions and splash areas. Those are good places to go when it gets really hot. We are not ones to take breaks out of the park during the day as it's more of a hassle for us then a benefit. We do take breaks in the park by going to an indoor show, grabbing a cool drink and snack, finding a shady place to relax for a bit. In Magic Kingdom, there is a great splash area by Dumbo. I usually bring a change of clothes for my kids just in case they get too wet. Evenings during the summer are my favorite time. With the sun gone, it's actually pretty nice out. The night time show/parades are amazing, and I would suggest seeing at least one. You could always take your afternoon break then go back at night for some dessert and a night show. If you have any more questions, please feel free to FM.

We go every year in August. It is brutal but manageable. We get up early and do the parks until about lunch time. Go back and enjoy the pools and hotels and then get ready for dinner and do a park or show after.

The schools go back early August down there, so the crowds are minimal compared to the rest of the Summer. Hot, but manageable with a lot of pool time!

Re: Disney... in the summer - the good, the bad?

We go in June AND Labor Day. It's hot, no doubt about it. But we manage just fine. In June I feel it's a little hotter and more crowded, but there's less rain. In August/September the southern schools are back in session but you deal with more afternoon rain and the possibility of hurricanes. For that reason I suggest taking insurance just to be safe. We altered our trip dates last year by two days because of a hurricane. I suggest not trying to do parks everyday, it does get to be a lot in the heat. I would leave every other day free to spend time at the pool and relax, or maybe even a water park.

Re: Disney... in the summer - the good, the bad?

The last week in August is the best with the crowds. It IS hot but the kids down south and in the mid-west have gone back to school so it is less crowded.

This.

When I was young, we went with this strategy which worked the best.

Just a note, schools start late here this year due to the Jewish holiday, our district goes back September 9th. Disney is releasing free dining promo for September on Thursday for the general public.

This is awesome. We are going the first week of September, knowing that our girls would probably miss 2-3 days. But if this is true, they won't be missing any.Chat Icon

Not all districts are doing that. I wish! Ours is making the kids go June 3rd and 4th. Then they are off the 2nd and the 5th and 6th. Wish they just gave themthat week off. Seems silly. Especially when they have them going a week later in June next year until I think the 26th or something.

Last two weeks in August or 1st week in Sept are great for crowds. Hot but with low crowds much more doable than late June or July.

so would everyone recommend going last two weeks in August if they had to go in summer?

I would personally rather go on vacation in the begining of the summer but since this isnt an ordinary vaca - I want to go at the best possible time.

And thanks so much for all the feedback and tips. I was so upset when I first realized that it would have to be in the summer but you are all making me feel so much better about it!

We went the last week of August and it was great. We lucked out...it was actually unseasonably cool for most of the week (80's instead of 100 lol) and there were no crowds. We went to Blizzard Beach for the first time and never waited on a line. We're going again this August also.

Yes is better to go the at the end of the summer. Last time i went to magic kingdom was first week june and it was pack and super hot. The schools in florida get out at the end pf may so the parks start to be more busy at the begining of the summer

Re: Disney... in the summer - the good, the bad?

Good afternoon!

If you're going to go in the summer you have a few options. You either want to go in early June before the Northern schools get out, or late August after the Southern schools have gone back. Crowdwise, late August/Early September is your best option. Crowds are very minimal at that time.

However, it will be hot and humid so you need to be prepared to plan accordingly. Getting to the parks early, taking a midday break to cool down at the pool, and returning the the parks in the cooler evening hours will help you get through it.

A Room Only discount for late August as well as Free Dining if you can push your arrival to Sept 2 will be available tomorrow.

If I had to choose a time during summer, it would definitely be the last 2 weeks of August, but I would definitely plan on those breaks.

Plus think of it this way, instead of the end of the summer being a let down, you'll have the trip to look forward to all summer long!
