changing phone carriers
Did anyone change phone carriers (for home / landline phone) and get to keep their number?
Im thinking of switching from cablevision to verizon when we move, but we'd like to keep our phone #.
TIA!

Re: changing phone carriers
It all depends on who you get on the phone that day and what the situation is.
I originally signed with Verizon & switched to MCI (are they even still around )...my number stayed the same.
I moved approx 3 blocks, same town - I sitched BACK to Verizon phone number had to change.
I moved literally down the block - phone number stayed the same.
I moved approx 3/4 mile in same town...phone number had to change - same carrier.

DH works for Cable. He was telling me when you switch from one carrier to Cable they charge a 1 time porting number charge ($40). I asked him if Verizon charges and he said no, but he's not sure if Cable allows numbers to be carried over to a new service. HTH!

Re: changing phone carriers
I don't think Cablevision numbers are portable to Verizon although the opposite holds true.
Part of the issue is that the first 3 digits of the phone represent the local area in which you live. And no I am not talking about the area code (xxx)-yyy-zzzz I mean the 3 numbers that are yyy.

Re: changing phone carriers
We just moved to NC and brought our NY cable number with us through vonage. WIth vonage we have three numbers. One for our NY friends and family, one for our NC friends and family and a separate fax line. But Cablevision did let us transfer our number to Vonage. I don't know about Verizon, though.
