Trying to get ahead of the mosquitoes
Any helpful tips to keep them away? The mosquitoes in our yard have been so overwhelming over the past few summers that we can't even make it to our netted gazebo without being eaten alive. We want to use the pool at night, but were only able to make it 10 minutes--once. I do have a pretty big yard, which makes it more difficult.
We've tried: citronella candles, tiki torches, essential oils.. I want to keep it natural and non-toxic.
Anyone find anything that really works besides fumigation?

have you tried a mosquito magnet - but you need to figure a few things out about your property- http://www.wikihow.com/Place-Your-Mosquito-Magnet
otherwise a few good fans can help keep the air moving and prevents mosiquitos

Re: Trying to get ahead of the mosquitoes
I went to ACE and they ordered me a bat box. I put it up high on the chimney. I am hoping that I get some bats to eat the bugs.

Also I found this natural stuff at Hicks once. It was I think in a white and purple box and you shake it in the lawn. It really helped for about a week.

Great post! I love being outside now, but once summer comes...aka the mosquitoes I want to stay inside unless I have a full body suit on.

I think about this all the time. I was even looking at my house trying to figure out where I'd put one.

I just saw on Pinterest lemon grass keeps them away. It has a citrus scent.

I've never heard of this. Hmmm, I might have to try this. We already have bats in the neighborhood but if this will get them to closer to our home so they can feast on some mosquitoes, I'll try it!

If you have them in the neighborhood I would try! They don't stock them in ACE but, I got someone to order it special from an ACE website. I want to say it was 20$. It came in a few days.
One bat can eat up to 500-1000 mosquitos an hour!

Re: Trying to get ahead of the mosquitoes
I've heard lemon grass (I think that's what it's called. It's a tall grass plant) naturally repels mosquitoes.

Re: Trying to get ahead of the mosquitoes
Thanks for all the suggestions!
I googled ideas before my original posting, but most sound total BS--I just want to know if anyone actually tried anything that worked for them. I know the bat house could work, but I don't think I want to go that route, b/c I've never ever seen a bat near my house or yard (or neighbors').
I will def try the lemon grass idea--I can put it in planters around the pool. But I'm not sure how well it'll work. If it doesn't work, then it'll still look nice. The other stuff might be a waste of money and time.

This is the stuff I was posting about before. It took me a while to find it. I got it at Hicks in a much smaller bottle. It did work. But, it's not an all summer thing. You have to reapply it.

Re: Trying to get ahead of the mosquitoes
Marigolds are supposed to help!!
Place near windows and doorways. This is an important step. Fill your window boxes with Golden Gate marigolds and pot up a few larger varieties like the African marigold near the doorways to help keep the blood suckers from coming into your home and buzzing around you at night. Pot up a couple to put on the bedside tables at your cabin to keep your vacation itch-free.
4 Dress up your outdoor table. Signet Marigolds have super-bright flower heads and a lacy leaf that will help cheer up an outdoor eating area while keeping the mosquitoes away. Pot up a variety of sized pots to make a memorable summer centerpiece. If your guests get hungry, they can even eat this particular variety of plant! Tips & Warnings Take off the dried flower heads at the end of the season and plant the seeds next spring to replenish your favorite marigold plants for free. Just keep dry all winter and plant in spring.
Marigolds are susceptible to spider mites and grasshoppers, so monitor your plants throughout the growing season.

Re: Trying to get ahead of the mosquitoes
We've tried... -$1000 worth of tree, shrub, removal -planted lavendar - every Off spray, clip on, -citronella candle -bug zapper
NOTHING worked. My kids get eaten alive and we ended up spending time in the house.
Bat box is here. I was against it, but Im not spending another summer inside.

This looks doable! Worth a shot--if not, then maybe next year we'll do the bat house.
