maternity leave and vacation days
Sorry this is long and I'm kind of thinking out loud here, but need to know if I'd be asking for too much. Thanks!
I just reviewed my employee handbook and it looks like I can use up my PTO while on maternity leave. My days get reset in July (baby is due in Aug). So if I don't take any days off from July 1st -due date, I'll have 5 weeks PTO to use. Then I'll use STD for 6 weeks. This means for a 12 week leave, I'll only be fully unpaid for 1 week.
Now for the next part. Since last July I've only used 12 PTO days, leaving me with 13 more days to take before July 1st. Unused days do not carry over.
Do you think it would be rational to ask my boss if I could carryover some of those days so that I wouldn't be unpaid at all during my maternity leave?
My thought is he is going to pay me for that time one way or another b/c there's no way I'm leaving 13 days on the table. So wouldn't he rather pay me for time off I'm taking anyway, rather than me taking another 13 days off over the next 2.5 months and then taking 12 weeks off a month later?

This isn't how mine works so i can't answer you, but i will say that I was thinking somethign similar, but my company says that I only get the PTO that I've acrued up until the day i go out. They act as if i quit and I am no longer accruing days... so I don't get teh full 5 weeks that I thought I would get....Luckily they did allow me to carry over all my days from last year so I have a good amount saved up...

My place was flexible with me with my vacation days, so I say no harm in asking.

It doesn't hurt to ask.
Also - ask and see if there is an elimination period before STD kicks in. At my job, I needed to use 5 days of PTO prior to STD - so the 6 weeks is actually 1 week of PTO and 5 weeks of STD so you could potentially need 5 more days of PTO for that as well.
