Teachers- FMLA?

Can someone please explain this to me? I know we can take up to 6 with with only 6 weeks paid... But... I'm thinking of taking 9 weeks. Someone at work told me that I don't need to file FMLA paperwork since I'd only be taking a few weeks more. Is that true?

Re: Teachers- FMLA?

Im pretty sure FMLA is 12 weeks unpaid. You can gat 6 weeks of partial pay through disability. Thats what I did with DD#1

Teachers- FMLA?

I took 6 weeks paid sick time (w/ dr note for recovery). There were 6 weeks left until summer so I then took FMLA for that time. I wrote a letter, it was approved by the board and to my knowledge that is all I had to do. So in total I took 12 weeks - 30 days sick and 30 days FMLA

FMLA is 12 weeks.FMLA keeps you on the insurance. I would fill it out. It cant hurt. I took 8 weeks with my DS but only got 6 paid bc it was a vaginal birth. I just didn't get paid for the 2 other weeks. FM me with questions.

Thank u Chat Icon I don't understand why someone at work told me not to do FMLA and if I'm only going over by a few weeks that it shouldn't matter. I don't get it. If it shouldn't hurt then why not. Chat Icon

Anything beyond the 6-8 weeks if fmla. You will come off of payroll but stay on insurance. I've hear d a lot of people say it took a while to get back on payroll after coming off. But nothing is ever easy with the doe!

crashing... I'm also NYCDOE and went back May 23- so payroll office was closed. I got a lump sum check for the summer and went back on payroll in the september.
FMLA bumps you down in seniority as well within your school. I got hired with a bunch of other 2007 teachers (the first 2007er actually), but I was the first to get excessed afterwards... just a little FYI

Re: Teachers- FMLA?

Let me explain something..I worked in HR for 10 years....

FMLA provides you JOB PROTECTION. It is unpaid and is NOT the same as Short Term Disability. They may run concurrently (at the same time). So for example, you deliver your baby on June 1 via natural delivery, you are paid for 6 weeks short term disability and at that time you are out of work - your FMLA coverage is protecting you while you are out on short term disability. It's up to 12 weeks. So depending on your insurance coverage, you may get the first 6 weeks paid via STD, then if you decide to take another 6 weeks it would be unpaid.

Hope that makes sense...
