FMLA ? for teachers
Can you share your school district's policy on getting FMLA.
In the past my district allowed FMLA once per year. Now things have changed. So I am asking, is your district very strict on how many days you have to work in order to get FMLA after having a baby?

Our is strict. You can only take FMLA after coming back and having worked a full calendar year.

I went out 2-3 weeks before I had my son. I used sick days but they counted into my FMLA. So I guess no.

I'm taking three weeks before the birth (sick days), 8 weeks after (c-section; using sick days) THEN FMLA for 12 weeks. Because my FMLA will take me into the summer, I'm hoping (but I'm not positive yet) that they will then extend my insurance straight through til September. All of this hasn't been approved yet but I'm hoping it will be (have to wait til after the baby is born to write the letter).

yeah, if you get a doctor's note then you should be able to.

All good questions. Well they say that you must work 1250 hours within the year that you want to take FMLA. Our contract says we teach for 6 hours and 50 minutes per day X 183 comes out to pretty close to 1250 hours. So if you miss one day of work, no FMLA! This is all new, my district never used to adhere to this. We obviously work more than our contractual school day. Grading, conferneces, meetings, setting up classroom, etc...but now they are counting the minutes and using it against us. I do feel something is not right about it, I don't know if it is illegal. That is why I want to know what other districts do. I am really upset about it!

sick days count as "days worked" in most cases. they should NOT be counted against you in this case.
call the union rep asap!!! get a copy of your current contract & fight this one!
