If you have a dog come on in!
If you are BTDT and have a dog or are FTM and have a dog...what are your thoughts/experiences/concerns/plans?
We have an Ozzie, who is an approx. 3 year old rescue, beagle/boston terrier mix. He's a fantastic dog, but does have a bit of a pulling tendency on the leash. I would say walking him with the stroller is my #1 concern. He is a totally gentle mush and he loves kids, knows his size and strength and is generally just a great guy with humans. He doesn't like other dogs so much. I predict him being lovingly protective of the baby, and I'm hoping that in that regard he will calm down on the leash when we also have the stroller. He's an intuitive guy and was so easily trained that I'm not overly concerned, but Ozzie and baby interaction is definitely at the forefront of my mind.
Other FTMs, what are your concerns? And BTDT - how did it go with dog and baby?

Re: If you have a dog come on in!
Here, here! I have a 10 year old shitzu and although this is my first he has been around my neice and nephew who he is sooooo good with!! He is such a calm dog and he sometimes cant even be bothered, lol. He used to sniff and lay next to the baby but its like he knows there is a baby there cause he never tried to lick or bite just wanted to see what all the fuss is about:) He likes to feel included!! I can't wait to see how he reacts to my baby: ) My neice and Nephew looove him and when my nephew got bigger , Gizmo was always following him around the house. it was soo cute!!

Re: If you have a dog come on in!
Crashing....I'm TTC and I have a 3 year old shihtzu and 5 month cane corso (italian mastiff that will weight appro. 150 pounds), with that being said I'm a little scare with the cane corso. My shih-tzu is very independent and calm, in the other hand my cane corso is a total mush but dont know what to expect from him yet. My god-daughter comes over a lot... she's only 6 months, and when shes around he sits next to her and wont leave her side, he licks her hand and wont let any dogs come around her.
Good luck ! HTH

Re: If you have a dog come on in!
DH brought baby's hat home before DD came home last time which helped a lot I think...got them used to the smell. Brought a blanket home too and left it in the living room so they got used to the smell and of course they started to see all the different 'new' things in the house (swing, bouncer, etc).
They did great, they really weren't that interested in her to begin with because they don't do much but they did sometimes walk away or look at us like "wtf" when she cried LOL
ETA: I have 2 black labs

If you have a dog come on in!
My mentality is it was the dog's home first. My dog is a mush I just have to worry about him licking her to death. He learned he's not allowed to lick dh and I except on the hand so ill work on that.

Re: If you have a dog come on in!
I just posted a question about walking the dog with a stroller on Parenting....
Walking dog with stroller....
My puppy Linus is 2 and a half, basset hound/bull dog mix. (Bully Bass) We have had him since he was 12 weeks old...so he is our first child!!! Along with the stroller, I'm also worried about jealousy!! He is so attached, sleeps with us in bed and pretty much rules the house....so I'm nervous he will get confused when our attention isn't focused on him 24/7. With that said I know he will never hurt the baby on purpose, but he really doesn't understand how big he really is, He's a 50lb lap dog! We are going to do the blanket trick and see if it helps....here's hoping!!!

Re: If you have a dog come on in!
I have a beagle and he will always pull the leash no matter what lol! He pulls as soon as he gets out of the house, but on walks he's fine 30 seconds in. I am going to have my honey bring home either a blanket or a hat from the hospital so that our doggie can smell the baby before he/she arrives. Our beagle is great with kids... he's def. going to be protective of baby as he is with both me and my honey

Re: If you have a dog come on in!
In terms of your concern, you could start teaching your dog to heal. If your dog is smart and considers you their true leader it should be pretty easy to teach. Another thing you could do is to practice with an empty stroller for a while first and get the dog used to it.

Re: If you have a dog come on in!
I have a rottie mix who is the same way on the leash, but she's scared of cars so she's a very panicky walker there is no way I can walk her and a stroller by myself. I usually take her (she walks better with me and dh would push the stroller or pull the kids in the wagon) now that I don't use a stroller anymore, the kids walk and I walk the dog. But when this baby comes, we're not going to be able to take walks without dh unless baby isin the carrier.
As for the dog with the kids on a normal day to day basis, she's great. She has barked at them a few times if they push it with her, but she has never snapped.

Re: If you have a dog come on in!
The only time I took the stroller out with Leo(when he was with us ) and Ginger is when Fatthead is with me.
We went for a nice walk on Sunday. Ginger has a lotttttttttt of energy. She walks her daddy.lol So we took turns who walked her and pushed the stroller.
When I was maternity leave and needed to walk them both I would wear tiny tot

Re: If you have a dog come on in!
I walk with the stroller and pooch. I've never had a problem but before I did it alone I had DH come with us. I didn't want to find out our pup was afraid or pulled and be alone. It really depends on your dog and how they walk to begin with. Definitely get a good leash and maybe even a gentle leader, which was brought up in the other thread.

Since our current childcare plan includes leaving the baby with the dog on the days MIL can't be there, I hope they end up getting along!

Re: If you have a dog come on in!
I have two dogs. One is a puggle who lovessssss people and the other a 55 ound rescue who is VERY protective of my husband and I and HATES everyone else. It takes a lot of work to have friends over because shes scary when they first walk in. So we needless to say were very concerned about the baby.
Before DD was here we walked her around the house with the stroller. She gets spooked by everything so we needed to get her used to everything. She growled at everything, toys, stroller, swing, everything in her nursery. When DD came home we were very cautious. But the dog somehow knew. She loves her so much. She never leaves my side now when I have the baby.
I think if you take the empty stroller and the dog out and train her without the baby in it it will be a lot easier for you when the baby is in it. Good luck and congrats!

Youre welcome! I think if you put the work in beforehand it'll make it easier when the baby is here. I used to sit on the couch with her clothes in my hand and tell the dogs "Watch the baby" so they would know not to jump on my lap which they always used to do. Now they know to watch for her when I say those words. In my album "Emma Jordan Brown" you'll see pictures of her with the girls :)
The black one is the one who was always skittish. You can see how well she is with the baby - the baby is just leaning on her and shes just laying there taking it. Last night she grabbed the big one by the ear and Ivy just licked her. Shes such a good dog with her. Its pretty surprising - pleasantly so.

If you have a dog come on in!
We have a pit mix that we cannot walk alone with the baby. THe dog loves DS but our dog is neurotic and has issues walking so its a big job. He does walk better with DS around because he always wants to be near DS. We have tried all kinds of training and outside of getting the dog whisperer we just live with the fact we have a crazy dog.

Re: If you have a dog come on in!
My dog loves the baby! And the baby seems to love her. The dog will lick the baby's face and DD will lean in with her mouth open!
So germs are no longer my biggest concern.
Our dog is a puggle/terrier mix. She has never shown me any signs of aggression and usually is afraid of other dogs. With that said she is very strong for her size (she's 30lbs.) and VERY playful. I worry when DD is crawling / walking she may try to "play" and be too rough. So for us we will have to supervise floor playtime with the dog present.
