Antibiotics Not Helping Ear Infection?
My 17.5 month old DD was diagnosed with a double ear infection on Monday, and was prescribed Amoxicillin. This is her first ear infection ever. We brought her back to the dr. yesterday (Saturday), and one ear still looks very infected, so the dr. changed her prescription to Cefdinir. I'm concerned as to why this hasn't cleared up yet. Has this happened to anyone else? What helped your LO get better? I am not a fan of antibiotics to begin with, I just obviously don't want to see her in pain. TIA!

Antibiotics Not Helping Ear Infection?
I'm sorry I don't have personal experience but I've seen a natural remedy that involves olive oil, tea tree oil, and sometimes includes garlic. You could probably google it. Or it might be on website rawforbeauty.com

I try to avoid antibiotics at all costs. Even the CDC has cautioned doctors not to over prescribe antibiotics. Pediatricians are notorious for this. Antibiotics disrupt the natural gut flora and can make your child more prone to sickness down the road.
First I would cut out all dairy and products with sugar. You can also try garlic oil. Good luck!

My DS was on Augmentin for a double ear infection and it was only worse 4 days later so he was switched to Omnicef (cefdinir). It helped him and he was better so much faster!

Happened to DD at 9 months. Double ear infection and after 10 days on amoxicillin one ear was still infected so she needed something stronger. I can't remember what it was. Cleared up but still had fluid. No infection, just had to keep an eye on it.

Our ped is of the philosophy that most ear infections are viral so antibiotics will do nothing to help it. If this is in fact a viral ear infection the antibiotics are useless. My friend swears by similisan ear drops to ease the pain...
That said, my kids have never had an ear infection so I dont have any personal experience!

I heard the same thing that the antibiotics do nothing for and ear infection unless they are bacterial. DD ped did give prescription for amoxicillan and I really dont think it helped.

Exactly, an allergic reaction to antibiotics due to an ear infection landed us in the ER with my dd. The ER dr also explained the same thing. Best course of action is to treat the pain.

happened to my son with one of his double ear infection was on omnicef and high fever still persisted after 3 days - then put on augmentin and it cleared properly

Amox is not the best choice for a really bad ear infection. My oldest dd was on a lot of different antibiotics for ear infections before we finally did tubes. However her ENT told me he doesn't like or prescribe amox. for small children with ear infections he said it doesn't work as quick or well as other antibitoics such as cefinder.

Thank you so much for the responses! It's comforting to know that my DD is not the only one whose ear infection didn't clear up on antibiotics. We took her to the dr. for a recheck today, and her ears look almost back to normal (knock on wood, hope I didn't just jinx it!). Thank you so much.

EXACT same thing happened to my DD 14 mo old lst week! WE were on the amox for 10 days...and the day we went off it...her fever spiked....went back and they said it was still red in the ear...so they put her on 10 MORE  days of meds - also Cefdinir ...that seemed to work...but i felt awful that she was with an ear ache and on meds for 20 days! 
I hope for the next one (knock on wood there isnt a next time) we just go right for Cefdinir
