Re: What pump should I register for?
I have an Ameda Purely Yours which was free from my insurance, but they sell it at Babies R Us.
It's under $200 which is about half of the Madela ones and I am perfectly happy with it. I've never used Madela so I can't compare, but this gets the job done. I've been using it for 9 weeks.
This might be a cheaper alternative if you can't get insurance to cover it - check it out, a lot of insurance will cover pumps.

What pump should I register for?
Def call your insurance company first and ask them if they cover breast pumps.
My friends all recommended Medela

Re: What pump should I register for?
I have the medela pump in style advanced. Got it almost 7 years ago when I had DD. I was happy with it then and hoping it still works for this one.

What pump should I register for?
Right now we are fighting with the insurance company about the breast pump (they said under no circumstances do they cover any pumps which I looked up the law and it says that they must cover a rental...if they find a way around it then find but they told me "under no circumstances").
If we can't get it then I registered for the Medela and am praying that I get that from a couple people for my shower (it's too expensive for just one person to get). It got the best reviews in the Baby Bargins book and online for the dual electric pump. Google the baby bargins information (you can usually find the info somewhere online). That will give you the information about the best different kinds of pumps.

I don't understand either how they can fight it. The law says they MUST cover at least a rental. Yet I've heard so many stories of them denying people. I wonder if there's somewhere they can be reported to.

Your group may be exempt, like my union was. I still got it covered bc there were two exceptions to that exemption, nicu or twins.

What pump should I register for?
I would not register for any pump. My son was in the NICU for 7 weeks and I had to pump. It was hard and in an entire 24 hour period I was unable to produce 2ounces of breast milk. I was on the fence about breastfeeding to begin with and felt pressured by the nurses when my son was born. I went and bought a pump, spent $300 I did not really have at the time. Only to have it turn out that I never produced breast milk. And I was unable to even attenpt to breastfeed until my son was 6 weeks. I wish I had waited. Because I did try for a lot longer since I had purchased the pump. It made me depressed and took a huge toll of me. Wait until the baby is born and you know you will be able to use it. They don't accept returns if the seal is broken on the box.

I know that some insurance companies are getting around it and make stipulations. I asked my union about exemptions and they said there were none. If I can't get one, I can't get one but I want to make sure that the union is aware of the law. I am in a GREAT union but the people who run the insurance and benefits up at the union hall aren't the brightest people. Just want to make sure they have all the right information before telling me "no...never".
And I almost agree with not registering for one because you don't know if you will be able to use it. However, if you can use it and you don't register for it, that's money out of your pocket, and your insurance company might be all out when you give birth. I plan on registering for one (if insurance doesn't cover it) and not opening it until I know if I need it or not so I can return it if needed. My SIL was strictly on the pump bc my niece wouldn't take the breast milk from the direct source. Everyone will be different, I would say just don't open the package until you know you need it.

If your plan is self funded and grandfathered, then they are probably exempt and don't have to cover it. I just went through the same thing.

I agree with not registering for one (or register at a store that it can be returned). I was very proBF and my milk never came in.
