Should I register for a breast pump?

I want a breast pump, but I am unsure whether or not I should register for it. I would like a good one, and the good ones are all over 250. I feel like I have already registered for several expensive items, I don't want people to look at my registry and think that I am a brat. I also wonder if anyone will buy me a breast pump or accessories for it. I know that it would be the last thing that I would buy for someone else. What did you all do?

Re: Should I register for a breast pump?

I actually didn't register for one though i was fairly certain I would BF and pump. i wanted to wait and see how it went before getting such an expensice item that is non returnable. I didn't want to feel guilty if BFing didn't work out.

Re: Should I register for a breast pump?

I registered for one knowing that I'd probably be the one buying it. The reason I registered for one was so I could eventually use the completer coupon to buy it.

I wouldn't worry about registering for expensive items. You never know how generous people will be. Almost all of my big ticket items were bought by friends and family.

ETA: If you're registering at BRU, they allow you to return unopened breast pumps within 45 days of purchase.

I did not because I wanted to make sure that BF would work for me. I tried nursing at the hospital and it went great so I bought a Medela Pump In Style (THE GREATEST EASIEST PUMP - I LOVED IT!!!!) from the lactation center at the hospital for $100 less than what they were selling it for in the stores. I recommend trying the whole BF thing and if it's something that works and you enjoy, I would them buy a pump. Otherwise, its money down the drain since you cannot return them.

Really? Brand new? Which hospital? Do all hospitals sell breast pumps?

Re: Should I register for a breast pump?

Last pregnancy, I registered for it and some of my family members chipped in and got it for me. I just didn't open it until I was BFing for a while and knew that I'd be able to continue BFing. Once you open it, you own it...no returning it.

Re: Should I register for a breast pump?

I just came from my childbirth education class and there was a lactation consultant there. She recommended not buying a breast pump until you see how things go.

I'm probably not going to breast feed, but she did mention that a lot of women rent them initially because they need the "stronger kind" that I guess is the hospital's "version" in the beginning.

I'd worry about if someone got it for me and then not being able to return it for whatever reason......

Re: Should I register for a breast pump?

When I registered they told me if I felt weird putting breast feeding items like the pump on the registry to wait till after my shower and THEN put it on so I could use the 10% off coupon to get it myself.

I got my pump at my shower. What harm is in putting it on there? No one is going to think you're a brat. It's not like your putting a fur coat and designer jeans on your registry! Chat Icon

Re: Should I register for a breast pump?

I just spent 4 hours at BRU yesterday registering, and this was one of the first things I put on it. I don't think anyone will buy it for me, as I would feel weird buying a breast pump for someone, but I figure I can get it with my 10% completion coupon. I don't intend to pump for about a month after the baby arrives, so if BF'ing isn't going well for me, then I just won't get it.

Re: Should I register for a breast pump?

I didn't register for it b/c you can't return it. I know a lot of ladies who bought one and ended up not using it b/c they couldn't/didn't like breastfeeding. I ended up using my cousin's b/c she never used it and couldn't return it. I think you should make sure that BFing is for you before you buy the machine b/c the good ones are expensive.

I live in Virginia and delivered down here but I would call the hospital that you will be delivering at and ask to speak to the lactation specialist and ask them if they sell pumps. The lactation center here at Alexandria Hospital had nursing bras, tops, boppy pillows, pads, pumps, lotions, everything (brand new) and cheaper than I saw elsewhere. I am so glad I waited. Given them a call!

Re: Should I register for a breast pump?

I registered for a breast pump thinking that I would use the completion coupon to purchase it. Much to my surprise, one of my friends bought it for my shower! DH returned it for me and used the store credit to upgrade to the Pump in Style since I registered for a cheaper model, thinking that I didn't want to put a high priced one on the registry. Looking back, I would register for the one you want. If someone wants to buy it, they will! If not, they won't!! Chat Icon

Re: Should I register for a breast pump?

I registered for one and it was pretty much the only thing we didn't get. Seemed like no one wanted to touch it with a ten foot pole Chat Icon considering I got gift cards for more than the amount of the pump and accessories.

I just bought it last week with the gift cards since I will be delivering very soon. I hope to try a pump in the hospital and if for some reason my milk doesn't come in or something I'll return it within the 45 day window.

As an FYI, BRU let me use a 20% coupon and a 15% coupon on the Pump in Style. I got the $279 model for about $190. Chat Icon

Re: Should I register for a breast pump?

You may just want to get the cheap manual pump to start. The Medela Harmony has positive reviews.

While your baby is nursing on one side, you can pump the other side. This would allow your DH to help out with feeding too. Why should they not get to share the joy? ;)

I heard working moms prefer the manuals 'cus it's less noisy and more portable than lugging the bigger electric one to work...

ITA. I rented a pump first before I bought one. And I got one from one of the lovely LIF mommies. BUT, I would have added it to my registry after my shower just to get the 10% off.Chat Icon
