question re: mailboxes that are attached to the house?
didn't want to hijack other thread..
Is anyone allowed to have them? or are there certain rules where you can't have one?
I also hate my current mailbox and love the look of the attached mailbox.
I keep meaning to ask my local post office, but I always forget.
All the other houses on my block have traditional mailboxes.
Thanks.

Re: question re: mailboxes that are attached to the house?
Boxes on the house are for "walking routes", where the letter carrier parks the truck somewhere, then walks up and down the street. If everyone else has a box near the street, it's a "mounted route", where the carrier doesn't leave the truck except for packages. On those routes, you can't put a box on your house. It must be by the street. It sounds like you are on a street route.

That's what I figured & it makes the most sense. I see it now on the usps.com site. Thanks!

question re: mailboxes that are attached to the house?
Half of our neighborhood has boxes on the house, and half has street boxes. I wish we had a street box. I don't like our house one. It's too high off the ground so I can barely reach into it, and my packages don't fit in it either.

That's weird that it's both! I had assumed it was mostly queens areas with the house boxes. Can you switch to a regular post?

It's really weird, like 4 streets over they drive the truck. They walk on our streets. I don't think we can do that, although I have no idea really! Maybe if I put it next to the house, not at the street!

I don't think it's an issue if you put a box near the street if you have a walking route. That much less walking for the carrier. You definitely can't do it the other way around, though. You can't make a truck driver stop and walk up to your house every day.
You can always ask your local Postmaster what the rules are. That's the best bet. Every post office can have slightly different rules, based on the neighborhood configuration.
