Babies and Flying?

I just heard from sister, she got engaged on Valentines Day and is planning to get married anywhere from Jan - March. The twins are going to be born in August. Am I able to take them on a plane by January? I am worried about their Immune system and all the germs on the plane. I really would love to attend my sister's wedding. I will check with the pediatrician by then but I was just wodering what you all though. Right away my mom told my sister she won't come because of the twins. So quick to jump to any conclusions!!! They will be between 5 and 6 months, so I would say yes! I want to go to Alaska in November when LO will be 6 months, it's probably the best time because they sleep more!

Re: Babies and Flying?

if you are vaccinating, after 8 weeks, they will have enough for it to be considered safe. Only thing is that it is in the middle of flu season and babies cant get a flu shot until 6 months.

If it were me, I'd still do it. I'd bring a huge bottle of purell and the purell wipes, wipe down the seats, trays and anything they would touch on the plane (which I always do anyway because I'm nuts)- but I definitely wouldnt want to miss my sister's wedding.

Babies and Flying?

I'm taking my 10 wk old DD to Florida next wk. I checked with my ped before booking and she said definitely go! If they are 5-6 mo next year at this time, you should be just fine. Go and enjoy!!

Re: Babies and Flying?

It should be fine. I was on a flight last week to Panama City and this woman had a newborn with her and the baby seemed fine. I think you should definitely consult with your doctor first but the babies will be much older and it should be ok

We flew with both DSs when they were 2 mos old. I asked the ped and he had no issues with it.

Yes you will be fine to fly with them at that age. You just need to speak to the airline and see their rules about seats...I was on a flight (I think it was delta) and they won't put two lap children in the same row bc they don't have enough oxygen masks (what comes from above in case of an emergency-the plane only had 4 per row.). That I'm sure varies by airline and plane size but get someone on the phone before you book tickets

Re: Babies and Flying?

It's possible I might be flying with my LO at 8 weeks. Possible, not probable, and of course only if the ped approves and DH and I feel comfortable. I would think if you talk to the doctor and are okay'd medically, and are comfortable doing it it should be fine!

You can fly with them once you get home from the hospital if you really want.

Even before the 8 week shots. Those 8 weeks shots will not protect them from the average everyday bug so stayign put before those shots will not make much of a difference.

It is honestly up to you and your stance on taking babies out. I took my DS to FL at 4 months and I would have done it at 1 month if we had a trip planned.

But like everything else it is up to your comfort level.

Re: Babies and Flying?

They can fly on a plane much younger than that, by 8 weeks at least. As for the germs on the plane, that's different and honestly something I would worry about even if they were a bit older. I think it's really a personal decision. Jan- March is a big cold/flu season so that would worry me even more. Tough one.

Re: Babies and Flying?

My mom had me on a plane at 3weeks old due to health reasons. She had to see a specialist and there wasn't a good one in Alaska. So it can be done very early, have fun at your sister's wedding!
